European Tour - 14 -17 Feb 2019 - Lake Karrinyup Country Club, Perth, Western Australia
This will be the third staging of this nifty little event. The brainchild of Keith Pelley, this event replaced the Perth International in 2017. It is a tri-sanctioned event that is an intriguing blend of stroke-play and match-play. Normal stroke-play will take place over the opening 36 holes, resulting in a cut that will leave the top 65 plus ties. There will be a second cut at the 54 hole stage, with the top 24 players progressing to Sunday. If there are any ties for 24th place, players will head to the 100 yard 18th for a sudden-death play-off known as the shootout hole.
Sunday will see the conversion from stroke-play to match-play golf. The top 8 will get a bye to the 2nd round while the next 16 play; 9 will play 24, 10 will play 23 etc. The shootout hole will be utilized in the six-match play-off matches should the players remain all square. The top 8 will then play those winning players in the 2nd round. The winners of those matches will progress to the quarter-finals and the matches will ultimately lead to the final. Endurance may count for a lot on Sunday as the players manoeuvre their way around Lake Karrinyup.
Lake Karrinyup Country Club was used for all five Perth Internationals prior to the inception of this event. It also hosted the Johnnie Walker Championship in both 2002 and 2003. It is a hilly course with generous fairways. Those fairways are lined by eucalyptus trees. Tricky run-off areas around the greens perhaps provide the toughest test for the players this week.
Thomas Pieters leads the field, which should come as no surprise. The big-hitting Belgian is a Ryder Cup veteran who should thrive in this format. Aussies Jason Scrivener and Lucas Herbert have both been in sparkling form while Englishman Tom Lewis looks to continue his promising start to the campaign. This event should provide for many spills and thrills as the European Tour looks to make it two in a row following a successful Vic Open.

Marcus Fraser - To Win 60/1, To Place 12/1
Marcus Fraser looks like another local player who could contend in this sort of event. He started the year poorly by missing the cut in Singapore. He then went on to win a pro-am in Australia before 17th place last week at the Vic Open. He made 26 birdies last week in an aggressive display that bodes well for him this week. Prior to the inception of this event, Fraser had finishes of 18th, 15th and 15th at the Perth International. He has decent course form and is clearly entering this event with a semblance of form.
Geoff Ogilvy - To Win 100/1, To Place 20/1
Geoff Ogilvy is a name that brings back a few memories. The 2006 US Open Champion was once a perennial contender in big events, which his three WGC titles bear testament to. Clearly, his form has been on the wane of late. Prior to last week’s Vic Open, Ogilvy had missed four consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour. He finished 35th last week after a poor 4 over final round saw him hurtle down the leaderboard. I just think it’s always worth a risk to back a former Major Champion in such a weak field. One also has to take into account his pedigree in match-play golf. Two of those WGC events were WGC Match-play Championship events. He should enjoy solid home support this week as he looks to regain his form.
The Man to Beat
Thomas Pieters - To Win 14/1, To Place 28/10
Thomas Pieters leads the field this week and to me represents great value as the market leader. The match-play nature of this event does make it a gamble to back the favourite, given all the permutations possible. But Pieters is perhaps the longest hitter in the field, which should bode well for this course. He also is a notable match-play specialist, picking up four points on Ryder Cup duty at Hazeltine. Furthermore, Pieters is in metronomic form. He has top 30 finishes in his last seven starts. Pieters looks a class above the field and should at least be in the final day’s reckoning.
