Goodwood - Feature Race
Unibet Stewards' Cup Heritage Handicap
Race 4 - 16:40
For any punters down on the week but looking to jump out of jail this is something of a minefield but a thorough market check is the order of the day as several spectacular late gambles have been landed in the Cup.
A lot of horses shorten up after the on course 'show' so taking early prices with Hollywoodbets might well be the best and safest option.
In form sprinters such as FLAVIUS TITUS and KHAADEM have already attracted plenty of support in the ante post market and rightly so.
The Roger Varian-trained FLAVIUS Titus won at the Newmarket Craven meeting when beating David O'Meara's SUMMERGHAND but the latter is 5lb better off and showed his well being with a fifth placing in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.
If rain arrives and brings about a going change that won't hinder Summerghand who won in the soft at Newmarket around this time last year.
With regard to Flavius Titus, the son of Lethal Force has benefitted from a winter gelding operation with two wins and a third in six furlong handicaps this summer.
Interestingly, he had stablemate SPANISH CITY back in third for his recent Newmarket victory and the latter has to be of interest after skipping the longer International Stakes at Ascot a week ago on account of unsuitable ground.
Spanish City often flatters to deceive as he's a strong traveller but I have a hunch he's going to relish aiming at the Lightning strong pace over the sprint distance.
Less obvious is the Declan Carroll-trained JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE as he's run only twice this season and shown little of the flair that saw him chase home Gifted Master in this 12 months ago. He's 4lb lower but the gamble that has seen Justanotherbottle contract to near the head of the market at 10-1 is based on what was and not exactly what the latest evidence points to.
David Barron is one of the best trainers of sprinters in Britain and has a serious player in the shape of GUNMETAL was a bit flat in this race last year but looks to have been brought along with the Stewards Cup as his major target in 2019.
The last time we saw him was when beating the small group that kept to the far side in the Wokingham, while we know he revels in the hurly burly nature of a race like this, as he's a past winner of the Great St Wilfred at Ripon.
Others of note are the industrious LAKE VOLTA and Wokingham fourth RAUCOUS who has to carry a 6lb penalty for a subsequent win at Yarmouth.
Prediction
18 - 16 - 131- 10 - 3
1st - SPANISH CITY (18)
2nd - Justanotherbottle (16)
3rd - Flavius Titus (13)
4th - Summerghand (10)
5th - Gunmetal (3)

Goodwood Day 5
Undercard
Neil Morrice brings you his Best Bets for the undercard on Day 5 of Glorious Goodwood
Race 2 - No 10 CORGI
Trainer: Hughie Morrison
Jockey: Jim Crowley
With just two runs under his belt this year CORGI has scope for further improvement and I'll be surprised if he doesn't pick up at least one big handicap prize along the way. After a very pleasing third in his return at the York May meeting he put in another eyecatching run to finish fourth in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot, getting a clear run throughout and keeping on well. His trainer is a dab hand with this type of stayer and the four-year-Old's prominent style of racing should lend itself well to the conditions at a course where you don't want to be behind a wall of horses.
-
Race 5 - No 1 BERKSHIRE ROCCO
Trainer: Andrew Balding
Jockey: Jim Crowley
The market spoke favourably for BERKSHIRE ROCCO on his debut at Ascot, but after being held up in rear he had too much to do to get in a blow at the impressive Kingbrook. It was very much an educational type of run that the colt will have learned a great deal from and be far sharper thus time around. He's worked with great gusto in preparation for this.
-
Race 7 - No 18 STORTING
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: George Bass
Backing a maiden in an ultra competetive handicap might not seem the obvious way to have fun but STORTING can prove an exception to that rule. He's been unlucky not to win at least twice this year and after throwing it away at Carlisle was given too much to do at Doncaster in June. His liking for cut in the ground gives him options should rain arrive, whilst he can also act on good ground but the draw (14) could have been kinder.
