Conspicuous in his absence from the Goodwood Festival last week, this presents
POWER OF DARKNESS with a fine opportunity to further boost his status as an upwardly mobile and fast improving handicapper under Vincent Ho. Marcus Tregoning has skilfully guided the 4yo to three career victories in spite of the colt's regular trait of pulling too hard. That cost him at Newmarket in May, but he bounced back with a resounding triumph at Salisbury when he came from last to first. For such a progressive individual a 3lb rise for that does not look excessive, and as long as his pilot can keep him under wraps in the early stages he can swoop to conquer at the business end.

NICHOLAS T, most of the12-strong field have been out of form. The Jim Goldie-trained runner has a habit of not winning by far which means he hasn't taken as much of a hike in the weights as he might have done. He has a useful turn of foot but his rider will need to have him reasonably close to the pace in order to utilise it effectively in this short straight. Jamie Spencer is doing the steering.
VIA SERENDIPITY is ridden by multiple Emirates champion Tadgh O'Shea and looks to take the script back to when successful over this course and distance earlier in the year. He finished out of the money in a Class 2 at Newmarket last month but that was a warm contest that has worked out well.
ZWAYYAN hasn't quite cut the mustard in his last four starts but competed on a mark just 1lb higher than when he won at Wolverhampton in March. He wasn't sighted in the Hunt Cup here in June, but this is more straightforward.
All eyes will be on Japan's Nanako Fujita who is the only woman with a jockey licence in her homeland but is considered in the top flight. Her mount
WAARIF needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Pontefract for which he was heavily backed. A line can be put through the performance and it would be no surprise to see David O'Meara's runner prove much more competetive.
ANOTHER BATT, BREDEN and
WAR GLORY are others that have claims to get into the mix with the latter interesting after a midfield finish in the Golden Mile at Goodwood when only just over six lengths behind winner Beat Le Bon.

Newmarket Best Bets Saturday
Race 4 - No 2 DALANIJUJO

Jockey: Charles Bishop
If there's a Group horse amongst the juvenile fillies at West Ilsley then DALANIJUJO is probably the one. Not many of the Channon youngsters win on debut but she landed some good bets at Doncaster last month. She worked well with an older filly on the summer gallops earlier in the week and comes here in favour of a trip to Deauville with all guns blazing.
Race 7 - No 2 GWAFA
Trainer: Paul Webber
Jockey: Fergus Sweeney
The versatile GWAFA doesn't stand much racing but comes here in great form and shouldn't be underestimated. A former winner of the Swindon Hurdle, he was a 20-1 roughie and needed the run when returning over a mile and threequarters at Sandown last month, finishing in mid division but only three lengths off the winner Knight Crusader. The step up in trip will suit, and he's got winning form on this course.

Redcar Best Bets Saturday
Race 3 - No 4 BROTHER McGONAGALL
Trainer: Tim Easterby
Jockey: Danny Redmond
BROTHER McGONAGALL forms part of a Tim Easterby entry of two and isbpreferred to stablemate Give It Some Teddy. He's been running better than his form figures indicate, especially at Thirsk last time where he made eyecatching late headway. Granted luck in running he can get into the shake-up.
Race 5 - No1 LOCH NESS MONSTER
Trainer: Mike Appleby
Jockey: Alistair Rawlinson
Although not obviously well handicapped, LOCH NESS MONSTER has shown he's ready for a return to the winner's circle and can do that with the assist of first time cheekpieces. He seemed a tad unfortunate not to be able to reel in Harvey Dent at Hamilton last time, and just gets the nod over lightly-raced favourite Country.

Race 2 - No 6 BILLY RAY
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Danny Tudhope
Connections of the lightly-raced BILLY RAY are banking on the rain threat materialising as the colt needs good ground or softer on which to give his best. He was the only one to make a race of it with the impressive Withhold at Newbury where he travelled and stayed on well. A disappointing comeback effort here was due to him being a couple of gallops short, while on his only other start this season he was only just out of the money in a hotly constructed handicap on the July course at Newmarket.
Race 6 - No 5 VICTORY DAY
Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Perhaps the 'darkest' horse on the entire Shergar Cup card, VICTORY DAY can avenge a somewhat unlucky defeat at York in June when he was heavily backed but got going too late. Held up in rear in a 22-runner field, he finished strongly but couldn't get past Recon Mission. He's benefitted from a break to target some valuable sprint handicap in the late summer and autumn and with Jamie Spencer the perfect man in the saddle the combination can swoop to conquer.

Haydock Best Bets Saturday
Race 3 - No 7 FELICIANA DE VEGA
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Jockey: Harry Bentley
With winning black type already on her CV, FELICIANA DE VEGA should be right in her comfort zone in a belated seasonal introduction. Her trainer excels with this type of individual and the fact that he's had her entered for better races tells its own story. She could hardly have been more impressive when preserving her unbeaten record at Deauville in December, and now needs to show she's sharp enough after an eight month absence.
Race 4 - No 2 ADDEYBB
Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Richard Kingscote
Making a swift return to the track following his second in the Group 2 Sky Bet Stakes at York, ADDEYBB will enjoy every drop of rain should that weather threat happen. The chestnut is a classy operator and appeared to meet a rejuvenate Elarqam on the Knavesmire. With the Frankie Dettori-ridden Wissahickon in opposition it won't be completely plain sailing for the selection, but I fancy Addeybb to bounce back.
