Selected First Group Matches | 5 November 2019
Hard Indoor - Milan, Italy
Group A
Alex De Minaur (1/10)
vs Alejandro Fokina Davidovich (5/1)
It has been a magnificent season for Aussie Alex De Minaur. He has won three titles on the ATP Tour this year. Significantly, all of those titles came on hardcourts. He also managed a creditable run at Flushing Meadows, making it all the way to the final 16. He has a 33-19 win-loss record this year, with a 6-2 record on indoor hardcourts. He further underlined his status as the favourite this week with a tremendous performance at the recent Swiss Indoors. Only Swiss demigod Roger Federer was able to conquer him in the final. So, it’s clear that the World Number 18 will be the huge favourite in this encounter. Additionally, De Minaur has court credentials having reached last year’s final: he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
His first opponent this week will be the slightly enigmatic figure of Alejandro Fokina Davidovich. The Spaniard has a win-loss record in 2019 of 49-25. He has been a dominant figure at times on the Challenger Tour, win wins on the Liuzhou and Seville events. He actually enters this event on a five-match winning streak after tasting victory in Liuzhou. He beat experienced pro Denis Istomin in the final. He also tasted some success on the tour proper, making it to the semi-finals in Estoril. Fokina Davidovich is a player coming into this event with virtually no pressure on his shoulders.
This will be the first time these two would have met. Obviously De Minaur is the massive favourite this week. But just look at those odds. 5/1 is surely worth a pop when you consider that he’s on a strong winning streak of five matches. I just can’t see any real value in a De Minaur victory.
Group B
Francois Tiafoe (23/20)
vs Jannik Sinner (13/20)
Jannik Sinner enters this event as the Italian wildcard selection for this year-end summation of youthful exuberance. The 18-year-old youngster has already tasted a modicum of success on the Challenger circuit, actually capturing three titles on hardcourts this season. But perhaps the most compelling evidence for Sinner’s pre-tournament billing as a potential champion is his recent performance at the European Open. He became the youngest man to reach an ATP 500 semi-final in five years. He beat top seed Gael Monfils in the process. The similar indoor hardcourt conditions make him an attractive proposition this week. And hometown favourite status always counts for something, particularly with the young and impressionable.
American Francois Tiafoe is the 46th ranked player in the world, but few would argue that he has lived up to his massive potential thus far. One would have thought that last year’s victory at Delray Beach would have been the catalyst for a real evolution in his game. But he has struggled for consistency, often looking towards power over guile. But he has shown glimpses of his true class this year, reaching the quarterfinals at the Aussie Open and Miami Open. But recent opening round defeats at Paris and Shanghai have shown his limitations. Tiafoe will be under huge pressure this week as one of the ore established players. It will be interesting to see how he handles being the enemy of the people with Sinner enjoying the home support.
A recent inductee into the world’s top 100, Jannik Sinner actually holds the head-to-head advantage over Tiafoe. He won their recent clash at the European Open. So, there will clearly be a healthy amount of optimism for the Italian. However, I can’t help but think that Tiafoe looks great value at 23/20. He has known pedigree and will have learnt plenty from their meeting in Antwerp.
