Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips from Sunday's racing coming your way from Newbury, Ayr, Wincanton, Stratford and Dundalk.
NEWBURY
Race 1 No5 HIROMICHI (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon - Jockey: David Probert
All eyes will be on Snow Lantern, an impeccably bred daughter of Frankel and Sky Lantern who finished second in a good novice at Ascot on only juvenile start. The dogs are also barking Derab’s name but an each-way alternative is HIROMICHI, who made an eye taking debut here last back end. The son of Dabirsim took home a minor cheque that day, but has done especially well physically through the winter, and will not be disgraced.
Race 3 DUBAI DUTY FREE STAKES (Group 3)
No15 VILLE DE GRACE (Each Way)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute - Jockey: Richard Kingscote
I can’t remember such a big field for this 1,000 Guineas trial in which a couple of tall reputations go on the line. Both Dandalla and Alcohol Free were high achievers last year and need respecting, but VILLE DE GRACE is one to consider at a longer price. She was turned over when odds-on when last seen at Yarmouth in the autumn but has shown plenty of gusto in her preparatory work for this, while her stable has been firing in the winners.
Race 4 WATERSHIP DOWN STUD TOO DARN HOT GREENHAM STAKES (Group 3)
No10 RHYTHM DANCER (Nap)
Trainer: Richard Fahey - Jockey: PJ McDonald
This is an open looking trial for the 2,000 Guineas in which RHYTHM DANCER can state his case for that Classic. The Dark Angel colt wasn’t able to build on his wide margin debut triumph at Haydock with a further win, but in finishing third to Campanelle in the Group 1 Prix Morny and occupying the same position to Alkumait in the Mill Reef Stakes (Group 2) showed he’s a name to be reckoned with. He’s been doing everything right at home, and can transfer that form to the track itself.
Race 7 No8 TITLE
Trainer: Roger Varian - Jockey: David Egan
TITLE will encounter vastly different underfoot conditions to those on his debut, but must be hard to stop if his impressive homework proves watertight. He was narrowly beaten by Aleas in bottomless ground that day, but it was nevertheless a very solid start by the son of Camelot, who could develop into a lively outsider for the Investec Derby.
AYR
Race2 No14 DUBLIN FOUR (Each Way)
Trainer: Graham McPherson - Jockey: Kielan Woods
DUBLIN FOUR has crept into this at the base of the weights, but with several of his foes boasting solid form will probably start a double-figure price. He took a while to warm to the task, but was ultimately impressive when opening his account for the season at Newbury. If he enjoys the quicker ground he can definitely have a say.
Race 5 CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP CHASE (Grade 3)
No6 DINGO DOLLAR
Trainer: Sandy Thomson - Jockey: Brian Hughes
One of the most historic races run in Scotland can remain in its homeland courtesy of a rejuvenated DINGO DOLLAR. The nine-year-old landed some good bets on debut for this trainer at Newcastle with the assistance of a first time tongue-tie. He has come out of that bouncing, and has champion jockey Brian Hughes in the plate. Admittedly this is a very tricky puzzle to unravel, and while a horse like Aye Right should not be far away, he rarely wins. Two others that make plenty of appeal are my selection’s stablemate The Ferry Master and Cheltenham Festival winner Vintage Clouds, while Chapel Stile could well be an overpriced improver.
Prediction: 1st DINGO DOLLAR, 2nd Aye Right, 3rd Chapel Stile, 4th Vintage Clouds, 5th The Ferry Master
Race 6 No2 WETLANDS (Nap)
Trainer: Nicky Richards - Jockey: Brian Hughes
Richards’ Greystoke stable is overdue a budding star, and while WETLANDS moves into handicap company for the first time he might not stay there for long. He’s been hugely impressive in each of three successes in maiden and novice hurdles and can now prove more than a match for fellow novice Enemy Coast Ahead.
WINCANTON
Race 3 No8 KENDELU (Nap)
Trainer: Nigel Hawke - Jockey: David Noonan
KENDELU looks the main arrow from this stable’s two challengers on this handicap hurdle. Since getting blinkers three starts back he’s been unlucky to run into some well treated foes, and deserves a change of luck.
Race 4 No3 VALSEUR DU GRANVAL
Trainer: Tom George - Jockey: Ciaran Gethings
VALSEUR DU GRANVAL can gain a first success in two years if delivered late in this handicap chase. A horse that often flatters only to deceive, he put in his best effort for quite a while when taking home a minor cheque at Market Rasen. He traded short in running that day, and could easily do so again.
STRATFORD
Race 5 No2 STARJAC
Trainer: Paul Webber - Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
STARJAC was at least a gallop short when reappearing at Stratford where he was beaten a long way. However, that badly needed outing can be improved upon and he has a good winning chance of recapturing his previous level of form
DUNDALK
Race 4 No9 BURNING LAKE (Nap)
Trainer: Joseph Murray - Jockey: Joey Sheridan
After a sequence of earning runs without winning, BURNING LAKE got the job done last week when tenaciously holding the challenge of Kinch. The strong traveller burst clear of the pack in that apprentice handicap and can make it back-to-back successes with the same jockey in the irons.
Race 5 No6 STOP ON RED
Trainer: Jimmy Coogan - Jockey: Chris Hayes
STOP ON RED is a money horse that’s started favourite for each of his last four starts on the Polytrack. He stylishly delivered at the beginning of March before making a good fist of a follow-up attempt when beaten in a photo stepped up to a mile. Importantly, his trainer drops the Mehmas gelding back to a more suitable seven this afternoon.
Race 7 No7 SLADE RUNNER
Trainer: Kieran Cotter - Jockey: Declan McDonagh
This six furlongs is far more SLADE RUNNER’s cup of tea than the seven over which from a poor draw he ran a cracker when last seen back in February. He had previously posted a course and distance win and a second over the sprint distance, and has been nicely freshened-up for this first run in almost three months.
