Our writer previews gameweek 7 of the 2016/17 Spanish La Liga campaign.
Gameweek six of the Spanish La Liga was full of surprises as Real Madrid were held to their second consecutive draw, allowing Las Palmas to take a share of the spoils with them after the final whistle. Unsurprisingly though, Barcelona hammered Sporting Gijon 5-0, while Atletico Madrid edged Deportivo 1-0, keeping yet another clean sheet.
Despite their rivals gaining ground on them this past weekend, Los Blancos remain on top of the standings going into week seven. It may be early stages, but things are looking extremely tight at the summit of La Liga. So let’s take a closer look and see if we can make some money out of the beautiful football in Spain.
Friday 30 September
Real Sociedad 8/10 | Draw 26/10 | Real Betis 34/10
The Spanish La Liga kicks off with a Friday night clash between Real Sociedad and Real Betis. The Royals have won just twice from their six matches played and are praying for a turnaround. They’ve managed only a single victory at Anoeta in three games this season, but will be hopeful of getting something against Betis, who have lost two of their three away encounters.
El Glorioso have been far from glorious at Anoeta, failing to win in their last eight attempts. With that being said, Sociedad at 8/10 seems well worth a punt to win a bit of extra cash for the weekend.
Saturday 1 October
Granada 15/10 | Draw 22/10 | Leganes 19/10
It may be early stages, but things are not looking good for Granada. The Nazaries are yet win a match, losing four of their six games played. In all fairness, Granada are not such a bad team on paper, with players like Guillermo Ochoa in goal and a midfield trio of Andreas Pereira (on loan from Manchester United), Sergi Samper (on loan from Barcelona) and Jon Toral (on loan from Arsenal), not to mention Isaac Cuenca who came through the ranks of Barca’s youth team.
Leganes have been fairly decent since the start of the season. For a newly-promoted team, I give them massive credit. They’re in mid-table and have scored against every team they played – except Atletico Madrid of course.
They should find the net here, making the Both Teams To Score market well worth a punt at 17/20.
Sevilla 9/20 | Draw 7/2 | Alaves 11/2
Sevilla come off the back of their first defeat of the season, going down 3-1 at Athletic Bilbao. To be fair, the Sevillistas are not a team that likes to travel. They were the only team who failed to win away from home last season and it seems as if that bad form has followed them into the new campaign. At the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, though, is a different story. They’ve won all three of their home matches so far, scoring nine goals in the process.
Alaves have been another team who has taken La Liga by storm since their promotion. The Babazorros have beaten Barcelona at the Camp Nou, snatched a point at the Vicente Calderon against Atletico and come off the back of a 3-1 win over Granada. Alaves are certainly a team full of surprises, but not many teams cause upsets at the Pizjuan.
Sevilla to Win + Both Teams To Score is the tip at 39/20.
19/10 Osasuna | Draw 9/4 | Las Palmas 29/20
Osasuna have been absolutely dreadful this season. Four losses and two draws from six matches shows that change is needed in the Reds’ camp. They’ve scored just one goal at home, which doesn’t bode well for their chances against Las Palmas, who are free-scoring at the moment.
The Yellows have banged in 14 goals in their six games played and come off the back of an excellent 2-2 draw against Real Madrid.
Las Palmas are tipped to win and offer great value.
Deportivo 9/10 | Draw 24/10 | Sporting Gijon 31/10
Sitting sad in the 18th spot is Deportivo, who have been far from their brilliant best. They’ve failed to win since the opening day, suffering three defeats and two draws. Gaizka Garitano’s men have scored just three times in the league, shipping in five goals.
Sporting Gijon are none the better and have lost three games on the trot, including two 5-0 defeats. Both teams are in desperate need for points, making this tie all the more exciting.
The Under 2.5 Goals market comes in at 13/20 and is definitely worth backing.
Sunday 2 October
Valencia 33/10 | Draw 5/2 | Atletico Madrid 17/20
Valencia, since the sacking of Pako Ayestaran, have picked up the pieces and won two games on the bounce. They’ll need all the confidence they can get when they host Atletico Madrid who have been rock-solid this season. Los Colchoneros have conceded just twice so far in the league, and are one of three undefeated teams in La Liga.
Voro, who is the caretaker coach of Valencia for the fourth time in his career now, will look to get the ball rolling and earn three consecutive wins for the Bats. However, a clash against Atleti came at the wrong time and they should fall short.
Back the away win at 17/20.
Real Madrid 1/8 | Draw 8/1 | Eibar 19/1
Real Madrid remain on top of the Spanish La Liga, despite drawing two consecutive matches. Zinedine Zidane managed to equal Pep Guardiola’s record of 16 successive wins, but failed to go further, with Los Blancos now sharing the spoils in their last two games.
Madrid, however, will just need to take a look at Eibar’s away form and feel as if they should walk away with more than a point. Los Armeros have lost on two of their three travels, conceding five in the process.
Zidane’s men should wipe the floor with them and are tipped on the Halftime/Fulltime Double at 4/10.
Espanyol 33/20 | Draw 21/10 | Villarreal 7/4
After suffering a 2-0 defeat at home, Espanyol are now down in the dirt in 17th spot – level on points with Deportivo, who are in the relegation zone. They face an uphill battle against Villarreal, who are in fine form this season.
The Yellow Submarine are undefeated in the league, with three wins and as many draws. Nicola Sansone has been an excellent signing for Villarreal, scoring three goals in four appearances for the club. The German-born Italian along with Alexandre Pato look a formidable force up top for Fran Escriba’s side.
For a bit of extra value, back Villarreal to Win + Both Teams To Score at a staggering 5/1.
Malaga 18/10 | Draw 2/1 | Athletic Bilbao 33/20
Another team flirting with relegation is Malaga. Juande Ramos’ men have managed just one win this season, suffering three losses. They’ll need to switch things up immediately when they host an Athletic Bilbao team that should be feared by many.
The Lions have won four successive matches in La Liga, scoring eight times. That should spark some nervousness to the home side who have only found the back of the net three times at La Rosaleda.
At 4/10, Bilbao are tipped to get something out of this match on the Win/Draw Double Chance.
Celta Vigo 6/1 | Draw 15/4 | Barcelona 4/10
Back to back wins is exactly what Celta Vigo need coming into a Barcelona clash. After suffering three consecutive defeats in the beginning of the season, the Sky Blues have found their rhythm, winning two matches on the bounce after holding Osasuna to a goalless draw.
Barcelona on the other hand, have been ruthless from the start. A small hiccup against newly-promoted Alaves, proved to be Barca’s only defeat of the season. They come off the back of a 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon and show no signs of slowing down. Even without Lionel Messi, the Catalan side showed their class and should do the same here.
For Barca standards, 4/10 is an excellent price and should be backed at all costs.
TREBLE @ 5/1
Atletico Madrid Win 17/20
Las Palmas Win 29/20
Barcelona Win 4/10
