Our footy writer previews round 8 of the French Ligue 1.
So after a brief one-week sabbatical, I return with news of a massive upset. The shock result in question was PSG’s 2-0 loss to Toulouse. That wasn’t the only upset that took place this past weekend, as we also witnessed Lorient beat Lyon and Dijon thrash Rennes 3-0.
We may well see some more strange results this week as Dijon are taking on Montpellier and Lyon are going toe-to-toe with St Ettiene.
Friday 30 September
Rennes 11/10 | Draw 22/10 |Guingamp 26/10
Our first port of call this week is Roahzon Park where an out of sorts Rennes will take on a Guingamp side who are fresh off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Bastia.
It has been a topsy-turvy fortnight for Rennes. Antonio Kombouare’s men looked set to turn the corner after beating Marseille 3-2 in gameweek 6 but this past weekend’s 3-0 defeat has seen them fall back into 10th spot on the Ligue 1 table. Guingamp have also endured a mixed bag of results recently, beating Lorient 1-0 in gameweek 6 and then losing to Bastia the following week.
The last time a game between these two sides saw over 2.5 goals scored was back in 2002.
With these stats staring at me, I can’t help but back the Under 2.5 Goals market at 6/10.
Saturday 1 October
PSG 3/10 | Draw 17/4 | Bordeaux 8/1
The defending champions are really struggling for consistency at the minute, which means their tie against fifth-placed Bordeaux will not be as cut and dry as the odds may indicate.
After a 6-0 hammering of Caen in gameweek 6, I honestly thought PSG were about to go on an extended winning streak. How wrong I was. The men from the French capital capitulated to a 2-0 home defeat to Toulouse only two weeks after putting 6 past Caen. While Bordeaux could only muster a 0-0 draw with Caen last week, the result was enough to see them draw level on points with PSG.
The recent head to head results between the two sides make for interesting reading, with the last two fixtures ending in score draws (1-1 and 2-2). PSG may have won three of the last six games between the sides but you have to go back to 2014 for their last victory. It is a huge risk but with PSG having to make an arduous journey to Bulgaria for a midweek Champions League tie against Ludogrates, I think Bordeaux could just edge this one.
At 8/1 it’s definitely worth a punt.
Caen 16/10 | Draw 22/10 | Toulouse 7/4
So our next fixture sees 15th placed Caen take on high-flying Toulouse at the Stade Michel d’Ornano. The hosts come into this one off the back of a respectable 0-0 draw with Bordeaux while the visitors come into it off three consecutive victories.
Each side managed a win when they squared off last term, with both results going the way of the home team. These games tend to see goals with none of the last eight ties between the duo seeing a 0-0 draw.
With that in mind, I'll be getting on the Over 2.5 Goals market at 23/20.
Nantes 11/10 | Draw 21/10 | Bastia 28/10
18th place Nantes take on Bastia this Saturday in a game that Nantes simply can't afford to lose. The hosts come into this one with only a solitary win to their names and will need to arrest this poor run of form if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation dogfight.
Bastia have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, winning three of their opening seven fixtures. They managed one of these wins last weekend, seeing off Guingamp 1-0. The decisive goal came from striker Enzo Crivelli, who turned in a Lassana Coulibaly cutback.
Crivelli’s night was to end on a sour note, however, as he was sent off after confronting the referee who had carded him for a dangerous challenge on Guingamp’s goalkeeper. Despite the absence of Crevilli, I still fancy Bastia to win this one.
Get on the straight win at 28/10.
Dijon 16/10 | Draw 2/1| Montpellier 19/10
Dijon will be looking to build on their 3-0 victory over Rennes when they host Montpellier this Saturday. They will have every chance of doing this as Montpellier come into this one in rotten form. La Paillade have only won a solitary game this term and have lost two on the spin.
This game should provide goals as both sides have been far from solid defensively. Dijon have conceded 10 goals during their opening seven fixtures while Montpellier have shipped 12.
With the aforementioned defensive records in mind, I strongly suggest backing the Over 2.5 Goals market at 27/20.
Metz 34/10 | Draw 5/2 | Monaco 17/20
Metz continued their dream start to life in the French top flight, with a 1-0 away victory over Montpellier. Les Graoullys have now won four of their opening seven games while only suffering two defeats. They are in for a real acid test this week, however, as second-placed Monaco are coming to town.
The men from the French principality racked up yet another win last week seeing off Angers 2-1. They will have to deal with the rigours of playing four games in the space of ten days though as they are facing Bayer Leverkusen in a midweek Champions League tie.
I’m going to stick my neck out here and back Metz for the win.
The new boys are in terrific form and could well capitalise on Monaco’s Champions League exertions.
Lille 17/20 | Draw 22/10 | Nancy 38/10
Saturday’s final fixture sees bottom place Lille take on 19th placed Nancy in a game that both sides desperately need to win. Both teams have only managed a victory apiece this season with Lille’s win coming over Dijon back in gameweek 2 and Nancy's coming against Lorient in gameweek 4.
Both teams have struggled for goals this term, with Nancy only finding the back of the net on three occasions.
I recommend backing the Under 2.5 Goals market at 9/20.
Sunday 2 October
Angers 31/20 | Draw 2/1 | Marseille 19/10
On to Sunday now and we kick things off with a game between 12th placed Angers and 13th placed Marseille. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Monaco while the visitors managed to grab their second win of the campaign, seeing off Nantes 2-1.
This is another game that I would recommend backing the over/under total goals market. Both sides have been rather frail defensively with Marseille having conceded nine goals and Angers eight. The two sides haven’t struggled for goals, though, with Marseille netting nine thus far and Angers scoring seven.
I reckon the Over 2.5 Goals market is the way to go.
Nice 8/10 | Draw 26/10 | Lorient 7/2
Table toppers Nice will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign when they take on 17th placed Lorient this Saturday. The hosts come into this one off the back of a hard fought 1-0 victory over Nancy while Lorient come to town fresh off the back of a 1-0 victory over Lyon
Nice have won two out of the last three clashes between the sides and are set to add to that record this coming weekend.
Get on the straight Nice win at 8/10.
Lyon 15/20 | Draw 26/10 | St Ettiene 36/10
The final match of gameweek 8 pits a faltering Lyon side up against St Etienne. The hosts come into this one off the back of their third defeat of the season while St Etienne managed to register their third victory of the campaign by downing Lille 3-1.
St Etienne have won three of the last five fixtures played between the two sides, including a 1-0 victory back in January. Games between these two tend to see goals, with 14 goals having been scored in the last five fixtures.
Once again, get on the Over 2.5 Goals market at 17/20!
