We preview week 23 of the 2017/18 English Premier League season with yet another full round of fixtures coming your way!
The Premier League returns with some eye-catching matches to look forward to this weekend, with the highlight fixture seeing runaway leaders Manchester City travelling to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.
Saturday 13 January
Chelsea 3/10 | Draw 9/2 | Leicester City 17/2 (17:00)
Chelsea welcome Leicester City to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but this tie should come too soon for new arrival Ross Barkley who joined the champions from Everton. Antonio Conte’s side had to settle for just a point away at Arsenal last time out as Hector Bellerin's stoppage-time goal rescued a 2-2 draw for Arsene Wenger’s side, before top-scorer Alvaro Morata wasted three one-on-one opportunities. The Blues will be hoping to return to winning ways and Morata will be desperate to bounce back from his poor performance. Conte’s side have won their last seven home games in the league, scoring 17 goals while keeping five clean sheets, conceding three times.
Leicester snapped a four-match winless streak by comfortably beating Huddersfield 3-0 at the King Power Stadium. Prior to that win, the Foxes suffered back-to-back losses away at Watford and Liverpool.
Chelsea are tipped to secure a fourth straight victory over Leicester.
Crystal Palace 19/20 | Draw 9/4 | Burnley 32/10 (17:00)
Crystal Palace have lost just once – 3-2 at home to Arsenal last month – in their last 11 league matches, although they only managed to win four in that run. Roy Hodgson’s 14th-placed side recorded a 2-1 win away to Southampton last time out, before earning a goalless draw at home to Manchester City – they could have won had Luka Milivojevic converted his penalty in injury time.
Burnley are seventh in the Premier League table, five points behind sixth-placed Arsenal. However, Sean Dyche’s men are winless in their last five matches, losing against Tottenham and Liverpool. Both of those games were at Turf Moor, with the Clarets drawing their last three on the road.
The sides are tipped to share the spoils.
Huddersfield 16/10 | Draw 2/1 | West Ham 19/10 (17:00)
Huddersfield succumbed to a 3-0 defeat away to Leicester last time out following three consecutive draws. The Terriers will be hoping to bounce back against West Ham and claim a first win in four matches at the John Smith's Stadium.
The Hammers earned a 1-1 draw against Tottenham at Wembley last time out, moving two points clear of the relegation zone. David Moyes’ side have lost just once – 3-2 at home to Newcastle last month – in their last seven league games, recording three wins and three draws.
West Ham beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the reverse tie and are tipped to come away with maximum points.
Newcastle 9/10 | Draw 23/10 | Swansea City 32/10 (17:00)
Newcastle will be aiming to end their dreadful run of form at St. James' Park when they host Swansea on Saturday. The Magpies moved three places up the table into 13th position after recording a 1-0 victory away to Stoke, making it two straight wins away from home. However, Rafa Benitez’s men are winless in their last six matches on their ground, suffering five defeats.
Swansea are bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety. Carlos Carvalhal guided the Swans to a dramatic 2-1 win at Watford in his first game in charge, but saw his side lose 2-0 at home to Tottenham last time out.
A tight affair is expected and I’m going with Swansea on the Win/Draw at 8/10.
Watford 29/20 | Draw 23/10 | Southampton 19/10 (17:00)
Watford lie 10th in the Premier League by virtue of their early season form. Marco Silva's side are struggling, having won just once in their last nine matches, losing seven times – including two on the bounce. Silva is under pressure to turn things around and will be hoping his side can get another victory over Southampton, having won 2-0 at St. Mary's in September.
The Saints are also in poor form, sitting 17th in the league, level on points with 18th-placed Stoke. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are winless in nine games, suffering five defeats.
Back the struggling sides to cancel each other out.
West Brom 21/20 | Draw 39/20 | Brighton 33/10 (17:00)
West Brom sit 19th in the Premier League table with two wins from 22 matches and are winless in 20 games. The Baggies did, however, get the feel of winning as they beat League Two side Exeter City 2-0 away from home in the FA Cup third round last Saturday. The one positive for Alan Pardew’s side is that they’ve lost just once (2-1 against Man United) in their last five home matches, drawing consecutive games against Everton and Arsenal.
Brighton, who are 12th in the Premier League, are winless in their last three league matches with back-to-back draws against Newcastle (away) and Bournemouth (at home) following a 2-0 loss away at Chelsea. Before earning a point against the Magpies in a goalless draw, the Seagulls suffered four straight defeats on the road, shipping seven goals while failing to get on the scoresheet.
I’m backing the draw at 39/20.
Tottenham 3/10 | Draw 47/10 | Everton 10/1 (19:30)
Tottenham host Everton at Wembley Stadium in Saturday's late game. Spurs are fifth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and two above Arsenal who occupy sixth position. Mauricio Pochettino's side, which defeated League One outfit Wimbledon 3-0 in the FA Cup third round last Sunday, are unbeaten since losing 4-1 at Man City last month. After three straight wins against Burnley, Southampton and Swansea, they were held to a 1-1 draw against West Ham at Wembley. Spurs will be looking to return to winning ways in the league and having won 3-0 at Goodison Park in September, will be confident of doing so against Everton.
Sam Allardyce's men slumped to a third straight defeat last Friday, losing 2-1 away to Liverpool in the FA Cup third round. Prior to that game, the Toffees lost consecutive games against Bournemouth and Man United, before draws against Chelsea and West Brom.
The home win is the way to go.
Sunday 14 January
Bournemouth 9/2 | Draw 32/10 | Arsenal 11/20 (15:30)
Arsenal travel to the Vitality Stadium on Sunday to take on 16th-placed Bournemouth. Eddie Howe's side are unbeaten in four matches, however, they’ve won just once in that run. They beat Everton in between draws against West Ham and Brighton and were held at home in their FA Cup third round tie against Wigan last weekend.
Arsenal will be looking to put last weekend’s shocking 4-2 FA Cup defeat against Nottingham Forest behind them. Arsene Wenger’s side have drawn three of their last four matches in the league and they’ll need to improve if they want to claw their way back into the top four.
The Gunners eased to a 3-0 win over Bournemouth earlier in the season are tipped to come away with maximum points.
Liverpool 2/1 | Draw 26/10 | Manchester City 23/20 (18:00)
Full match preview to follow shortly.
Monday 15 January
Manchester United 2/9 | Draw 52/10 | Stoke City 12/1 (22:00)
Manchester United welcome relegation-threatened Stoke to Old Trafford on Monday night, with the Potters hoping to appoint a new manager following the sacking of Mark Hughes. Republic of Ireland manager Michael O'Neill and Derby boss Gary Rowett are among those to have been linked with the role.
Jose Mourinho’s men made it two wins on the bounce after following up their 2-0 victory at Everton with another 2-0 win at home to Derby County in the FA Cup third round. United’s four-match winning streak was ended by Stoke in September with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring a brace in a 2-2 draw at the bet365 Stadium. But with Stoke struggling and winless in their last seven away games, suffering four losses, it should be a comfortable evening for Mourinho’s men.
Take United on the (-1) Handicap at 6/10.
