Clermont will be looking to secure the top spot on the Pool 2 Champions Cup standings when they play host to a revitalised Ospreys outfit on Saturday the 20th of January.
Last season's defeated finalists, Clermont, will be looking to ensure they get another bite at the Champions Cup cherry by getting one over a resurgent Ospreys outfit this coming weekend. The French giants come into this one off the back of a 34-21 humbling at the hands of an out of Sorts Northampton side.
The Ospreys enjoyed a much more productive weekend last time out as they managed to draw 15-15 with defending champions Saracens. The result has seen the Ospreys give themselves a chance at qualification heading into the last pool round.
ASM Clermont Auvergne v Neath-Swansea Ospreys | Saturday 20 January | Marcel-Michelin | 17:15
To Win (80 Mins)
Clermont 2/11 | Draw 25/1 | Scarlets 7/2
ASM Clermont Auvergne
I have to be honest and admit I really didn't see that performance from Northampton coming. The 'Saints were much-improved last week and took full advantage of Clermont's rather uninspired performance. The French mega-club looked devoid of ideas on attack, which is a real worry headed into this weekend as it's not the first time that Clermont have flattered to deceive with ball-in-hand this term.
Despite Clermont's defeat last weekend, the French side really don't have to do much to secure qualification for the next round as they already sit five points clear of the third-placed Saracens on the Pool 2 standings. This means this weekend's hosts don't even have to secure a bonus point here in order to advance to the next round as one of the best-placed runners-up as they beat Saracens home and away. Clermont will want top spot and the home quarter-final that comes with it, however.
Neath -Swansea Ospreys
The Welsh comeback kids really have turned their season around with last week's late Dan Biggar penalty ensuring the Scarlets would have something to play for this coming weekend. They currently sit two points clear of Saracens on the Pool 2 standings and a win here would see them advance to the next round of the competition.
The Scarlets will be feeling the heat when they head to France this weekend, however, as they have to get some points here as Saracens are hosting Northampton this weekend, and despite the 'Saints heroics against Clermont last weekend, they are unlikely to repeat the dose at the Allianz. A Saracens win and a Scarlets lose would the former move into contention for a Champions pool phase best runners-up berth, even if the Scarlets managed to claim two bonus points against Clermont due to their head-to-head record with Saracens.
Verdict: Clermont 2/11
They will win this one but it'll be far from convincing. I suspect we'll witness a scrappy affair here with the hosts edging it by four points or so.
