It’s quite a change in tempo this week on the European Tour, with the Desert Swing abandoned for the shores of Australia.
ISPS Handa Vic Open | 7 - 10 February | 13th Beach Golf Links, Geelong, Australia
Though not nearly as exclusive as the Saudi Invitational, this event could be said to have the moral high ground. The European Tour came under harsh criticism for holding an event in Saudi Arabia amid a plethora of human rights concerns. They get to set the record straight this week with an event that runs a men’s and women’s field concurrently: you have to applaud the forward-thinking initiative pioneered by the European Tour and LPGA Tour. This will be the first year that this event is co-sanctioned by the European Tour though the event actually dates back to 1957.
The Beach Golf Links is- as the name clearly suggests- a picturesque coastal course that will clearly be affected by winds: winds are set to be fairly brisk on Saturday, coming off the Bass Strait. The event will be alternated over two course over the first two days: the Creek Course and the Beach Course. The Beach Course will then host the weekend. The Creek course is designed by Nick Faldo and is more inland. The Beach Course will play very much like a links course, with undulating greens and deep bunkers. Both courses are fairly short par 72’s, so the wind will be necessary to keep scores reasonable. The men and women will play in alternating groups over the two days.
There will be two cuts this week; a 36 hole cut as well as a 54 hole cut. It should add another level of intrigue with more of an elimination feel to proceedings. Jason Scrivener and Lucas Herbert lead a strong Aussie contingent this week, while New Zealander Ryan Fox looks to play the role of antipodean spoiler. Aaron Rai has been in decent form while the likes of Andrew Johnston and Scot Hend may attract formidable galleries. Let’s hope that Keith Pelley has yet another success with what has the potential to be a ground-breaking event.

Value Bets
Adrian Otaegui- To Win 45/1, To Place 19/2
Adrian Otaegui is a player with a proven pedigree on the biggest stage, making his 45/1 price look rather unbelievable. He shot four sub 70 rounds last week on a course that never really suited his accuracy-based game. Otaegui has two victories on the European Tour and ran into brilliant form towards the business end of last season. He finished in a tie for third at the Turkish Airlines Open before a T16 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. He then had a superb DP World Tour Championship, finishing in a tie for fourth.
Ben Eccles- To Win 66/1, To Place 14/1
Local boy Ben Eccles should feel quite confident, especially going into an event that is pretty close to his heart. The Melbourne resident has some recent form in his home country: he tied for sixth at the Australian PGA Championship just prior to Christmas. He also has excellent course form, with back-to-back fifth-place finishes. Add to that the fact that he finished third in 2015 and you have a fairly tempting offer at 66/1.
The Man to Beat- Lucas Herbert- To Win 18/1, To Place 39/10
Lucas Herbert looks to me to represent the best value amongst the upper echelons of the market. The big-hitting Aussie should be able to dominate this course with his prodigious length. He is coming off a great showing in Dubai, where he tied for seventh. Lucas Herbert placed five times last season. That rather encouragingly included a great showing at the blustery Verdura Course of the Sicily Open. He has cracked the top 30 five times in this event, including a tie for sixth last season. Herbert is a real young Aussie talent who will be look to join the likes of Jason Day and Adam Scott on the real big stage.
