Five talking points from some of the weekend's sporting highlights.
Jaguares halt Lions in Argentina
The Jaguares showed their mettle in Argentina as they ran away 49-35 victors against the Lions. The hosts needed just 45 seconds to get on the board with a blitz try down the middle of the park. The Lions used their maul and strong forwards to get back in the game as Marx scored twice for the Gauteng franchise. But the hosts kept responding with tries carving through the Lions defence with alarming regularity. Quality performance by the Jaguares.
Hurricanes to go all the way
TJ Perenara ran on for the 100th time as the Hurricanes outscored the Highlanders to win 29-12. Beauden Barrett scored first to set the tone for the remainder of the encounter. The match saw some outrageous tries with Vince Aso's leaping dive in the corner the standout score of an exhilarating clash. The 'Canes are now on a three-match winning streak ending the Highlanders unbeaten run this season. Early days but I'm tipping the Canes to go all the way.
Ball tampering overshadows Morkel's man of the match performance
South Africa took a 2-1 series lead after an emphatic 322 run victory on Day four at the picturesque Newlands. Morne Morkel's nine wickets was the positive highlight of this series after the ball-tampering storm. Bancroft who was caught on camera applying a foreign item to the ball was charged 75% of his match fee and handed three demerit points, Steve Smith has stepped down as the Australian skipper and could face a lifetime ban from Cricket Australia.
Taniela Tupou Cited for Dangerous tackle
Stormers winger Craig Barry was unfortunately hit by a no arms tackle by Reds prop Taniela Tupou in an incident that was not picked up by referee Marnus van der Westhuizen, Tupou was later cited for his challenge. Stormers coach Robbie Fleck slammed the referee after he felt his players were left exposed to cynical challenges and were not protected as the Stormers held on to win their second on the trot.
The Sharks a no-show
The Sharks are struggling in Australasia after a heavy loss to the Rebels on Friday morning. The KZN franchise have two more tough fixtures with the Blues and Hurricanes set to run hard at them. And with the two lossess already under their belt, I don't see how that will change against fierce New Zealand opposition.
