The 2016 champions arrival in Melbourne presents Rebels’ Saffa coach Dave Wessels with his toughest test to date in 2018.
Rebels v Hurricanes
30 March 10h45
AAMI Park
To Win (80 Mins)
Rebels 3/1
Draw 25/1
Hurricanes 1/4
Handicap Rebels (+10.5) 9/10
Hurricanes (-10.5) 9/10
The Aussie outfit, perennial bottom-feeders in seasons past, have raced ahead to lead the pack so far this year and will need to call upon every last inch of their resolve if they are to beat the Wellington side and set a new precedent in the competition.
Rebels
Who would have thought it? The Rebels, leading the Super Rugby charge after six rounds of action? And yet, this is the precise situation in which we find ourselves following the Melbourners’ spectacular start to 2018, which has included four wins from their first five outings. Frightening stuff when considering this is the same side that finished rock-bottom of the 2017 standings.
Sure, the axing of the Western Force has afforded the Aussie teams a higher quality playing pool from which to select, but that hasn’t made the Rebels’ early-season assault any less remarkable. The form of ol’ Willy Genia, Marika Koroibete and Reece Hodge has been awesome to watch and indeed there is every reason to believe they can maintain this run of form through to the knockouts.
Perhaps it is this very fact that has made this week’s clash against the Hurricanes all the more crucial. A win, and the Rebels will firmly believe a title charge is on. A loss, and they may be shown up as the pretenders many are claiming them to be. It’s certainly no stretch to suggest that the contest at AAMI Park is the game of the weekend. Here’s to hoping the Rebels deliver.
Hurricanes
After that infamous blip at Loftus in Round One, it’s been all smooth sailing for Chris Boyd’s men since then. Three wins on the bounce has seen them mix it up amongst the pack of front-runners once more, with very little indication of slowing up anytime soon.
While this weekend’s fixture would ordinarily be seen as an easy BP win for the men in yellow, the form of this Rebels side has thrown somewhat of a spanner in the works. The Canes can ill-afford to underestimate Wessels’ boys and would be wise to take the points when they present themselves rather than opt for their usual reckless attacking brand of footy. Still, with two Barretts in the side, they remain the favourites.
Verdict: Rebels (+10.5) 9/10
I’m sticking my neck out and going for a Rebels win in Melbourne. The Hurricanes may just come into this one a little overconfident; something upon which the Aussies will look to pounce. What a result this would be for the competition!
