Check out our preview for the inaugural edition of the Saudi International which takes place at the Royal Greens Golf and Country club between 31 January and 3 February.
Saudi International | 31 January - 3 February | Royal Greens Country Club, Saudi Arabia
The inaugural staging of this event has been a source of considerable controversy in recent weeks. The European Tour has come under fire from some for not boycotting this leg of the desert swing in Saudi Arabia. The murder of Jamal Khashoggi virtually cast the Arab nation as persona non grata in the global community. But money talks, and huge appearance fees must have enticed four of the world’s top five golfers to attend the inaugural Saudi International this week. This event is actually one of six events that are staged on the Arabian Peninsula this season.
The Royal Greens Golf and Country Club lies about two hours from Mecca itself. It is a coastal course that is located adjacent to the Red Sea. The Dave Sampson designed course was opened as recently as 2017 and features an abundance of dog-legged holes. The greens run at about 11 on the stimp while four lakes give it some theatre. At just a smidge over 7,000 yards, this course is extremely short by modern standards. That means one of two things- either the bombers will destroy this course or the shorter hitter stands a fighting chance. It’s hard to make that determination when a course has yet to be played.
As I mentioned earlier, four of the top five golfers in the world will be on display, including last week’s champions from both premium tours. World Number One, Justin Rose, cemented his top ranking with a brilliant performance at Torrey Pines. But it was Bryson DeChambeau who truly excelled, smashing the course record at the Dubai Desert Classic en route to his fourth win in eight starts. Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka will be looking to regain some lost ground while the likes of Garcia and Patrick Reed lurk menacingly in the chasing pack. So a truly great field seems to suggest that the upper echelons of world golf have few moral compunctions, perhaps a slightly hypocritical aside considering I still wrote this preview.
To Win Outright:
Justin Rose 13/2 | Bryson DeChambeau 13/2 | Dustin Johnson 7/1 | Brooks Koepka 9/1 | Sergio Garcia 14/1
Value Bets
Paul Waring- To Win 110/1, To Place 24/1
I have opted to avoid most of the heavy hitters this week. Clearly, huge appearance fees have been used to entice the upper crust, and one always wonders about the motivation levels in that instance. As I said earlier, perhaps the shorter, accurate hitters will stand a decent chance this week. And looking at form, you can do a lot worse than Paul Waring in the place markets. He claimed his maiden European Tour title last summer and is in exceptional form. He finished sixth in Abu Dhabi before a brilliant third place at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Alvaro Quiros- To Win 125/1, To Place 25/1
I am hedging my bets with my second slightly speculative bet this week. I opted for Waring on the basis of the short, accurate hitting quota. I have also decided to select a player with devastating length from the tee, hoping that he can assault this relatively short course. Spaniard Alvaro Quiros is frustratingly inconsistent but does come into this event with some form to his name. He finished in a tie for third in Dubai. Quiros also finished runner-up last season in Morocco. He is an attractive long shot, particularly looking at last week’s efforts.
The Man to Beat- Ian Poulter- To Win 25/1, To Place 11/2
Ian Poulter is someone who seemed stuck in the golfing doldrums not too long ago. But a win in Houston seemed to galvanize Poulter, whose typically heroic exertions at the Ryder Cup have only further emboldened the charismatic Brit. He has started the year brilliantly, finishing no lower than eighth in his three starts thus far. That included a third place last time out at the Dubai Desert Classic. Always a strong bet for the first round leader market- he has opened with scores of 67, 66 and 62 thus far this season- fans of Poulter will be enthused by his efforts in Dubai on Sunday. He shot a flawless 64 in a surge up the leader-board which makes him an attractive dark horse this week.
