Damien Kayat has an in-depth look at the Waste Management Phoenix Open which takes place at TPC Scottsdale between 31 January and 3 February.
Waste Management Phoenix Open | 31 January - 3 February |TPC Scottsdale, Arizona
This is one of the oldest events on the PGA Tour, dating back as far as 87 years. Originally known as the Arizona Open, this event is now colloquially referred to as the ‘People’s Tournament’. The raucous atmosphere is more akin to a UFC event, with fans actively encouraged to foster a slightly belligerent ambience. This makes it quite unique in comparison to other, more demure events. That is perhaps why experience has often proved vital in attaining success around TPC Scottsdale.
The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale was actually designed specifically for this event and this will be the 31st time that it plays host to the Phoenix Open. It actually underwent fairly extensive renovations prior to the 2015 renewal. About 100 yards was added while the greens were remodelled. It didn’t really affect the generally low-scoring conditions. This is a links-style desert course that has an exceptionally dramatic finish. The reachable par 5 15th then makes way for the daunting par 3 16th. The amphitheatre helps to create a daunting atmosphere that has unmanned some. Water snakes its way in and around the final holes, making for potentially huge swings in power.
Jon Rahm is a proven desert aficionado and unsurprisingly leads the markets this week. Some of the big boys are off to Saudi Arabia this week, meaning this isn’t the strongest Phoenix Open ever. Justin Thomas looks to regain some lost momentum while Hideki Matsuyama will be looking to build on some recent improvements and add to his two Phoenix titles. Defending champion Gary Woodland will be looking to join a rich tradition of multiple winners here while recent WGC Champion Xander Schauffele looks to continue his excellent form. And let’s not forget three-time champion and fan favourite Phil Mickelson. Lefty electrified the crowds of the Desert Classic and will be looking to feed off of the rambunctious Arizona faithful.

2018: Gary Woodland (-18)*playoff
2017: Hideki Matsuyama (-17)*playoff

2014: Kevin Stadler (-16)
To Win Outright
Jon Rahm 7/1 | Justin Thomas 9/1 | Hideki Matsuyama 12/1 | Xander Schauffele 14/1 | Gary Woodland 18/1
Value Bets
Phil Mickelson- To Win 25/1
Old lefty just has a penchant for certain events, perhaps best exemplified in his love affair with Augusta. But his form around TPC Scottsdale is equally compelling. The three times champion also happens to be the last man to shoot 60 around the Stadium Course. He has finished lower than 16th in his last three starts in Phoenix. Add to that his recent brilliance in the desert. He flirted with 59 in the opening round of the Desert Classic, ultimately having to settle for yet another 60. He eventually had to settle for a runner-up spot there, but it’s clear that Mickelson has come out to play this season.
Brendan Steele- To Win 100/1
This is a decision that is purely based on the notion that TPC Scottsdale rewards experience. Steele finished well down the pecking order at the Desert Classic before being cut at Torrey Pines. So current form is hardly inspirational. However, his form around this cauldron is imposing. Steele finished third last year and hasn’t finished lower than 26th since 2012. That includes three other top 10’s. Steele seems to thrive in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the ‘People’s Tournament’ and should represent great value in the place markets.
The Man to Beat- Jon Rahm- To Win 7/1
While I principally attempt to avoid favourites, rather digging greedily for value, it’s hard to ignore Rahm’s particular resume. The Arizona State Alumni is a desert specialist with course figures around here that read 5-16-11. Add to that excellent current form figures that read 8-6-5, and you have a fairly encouraging overlap between form and experience. Rahm won the Hero Golf Challenge just prior to Christmas, highlighting a period of protracted form. He may feel slightly deflated after flopping during the final round at Torrey Pines. At one point he was within a shot of eventual champion Justin Rose. But the charismatic Rahm feeds off of the adrenalin here and should be in the hunt for victory.
