France will be looking to buck a series of dismal results when they host a solid and settled Wales outfit at the Stade de France on Friday.
France v Wales
1 February 22h00
Stade de France
To Win (80 mins)
France 9/10
Draw 17/1
Wales 19/20
Since beating Italy and England on consecutive weekends during last season’s Six Nations, France have lost six of their last seven Test matches. Jacques Brunel has continually failed to adopt a clear-cut game plan and it’s this lack of identity that has seen his team stumble from one result to the next.
The fact that there seems to be new faces in the French squad every week hasn’t exactly aided the cause and with the World Cup but a few months away, it’s high time Brunel and his coaching staff added some consistency to their selections.
They open their Six Nations campaign by welcoming Wales to the Stade de France; a side on a nine-match winning run. In fact, Warren Gatland’s men have triumphed in six of the last seven encounters between the two nations, adding some extra bite heading into Friday’s fixture.
Gatland’s is a tried and tested squad armed with the knowledge of just how they want to play the game. Despite their status as the third best outfit in world rugby, not many view them as contenders for this season’s northern hemisphere showpiece or indeed the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
They will want to put any lingering doubts to bed by playing to their full potential these next few months.
The hosts have lost Racing 92 flanker Bernard le Roux to injury (out for the duration of the tournament), while the suspended Toulon centre Mathieu Bastareaud is also expected to be missing, albeit just for the weekend. Montpellier and former South Africa U20 lock Paul Willemse is expected to make his debut for Le Bleu either in a starting role or as a substitute.
Wales will be without fullback-ace Leigh Halfpenny as he continues his way back from an injury he picked up in the November internationals, but they have received a boost with the news that experienced trio Liam Williams, Gareth Davies and Ross Moriarty are all set to return.
Verdict: Wales 19/20
With wet conditions a possibility, a lot will come down to the accuracy of each side’s set piece; perhaps an area Wales will look to gain an advantage. The Test will be a close one, but it is the superiorly coached Wales who should come out trumps by between seven and 10-points.
