2019 European Tour | Alfred Dunhill Links Championships
St Andrews, Kingsbarnes, Carnoustie
Thursday 26 September - Sunday 29 September 2019
Last week’s flagship BMW PGA Championship delivered in spades, with an atmosphere that occasionally flirted with the over-the-top histrionics of the PGA Tour. It was a pity that Rahm couldn’t quite keep up the challenge, with Danny Willett eventually cantering to victory over the last few holes. The tour makes the short trip from England to Scotland, with the only pro-am on the European Tour. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship started as recently as 2001. It feels like a more entrenched part of the European Tour, which is a testament to the way this event has captured the imagination. The cut will be made after day three, with the players alternating between three classic links courses. Sunday will see the players return to St Andrews for the final round.
St Andrews often referred to as the home of golf, has become something of a sitting duck in recent years. Ross Fisher shot a 61 in benign conditions two years back. It really needs some weather this week, with the course already nullified due to the presence of the amateurs. Kingsbarns is the most recent course, with Branden Grace shooting a 60 en route to capturing the 2012 title. Carnousite is certainly the trickiest test, even with the more forgiving layouts this week. Affectionately known as ‘Carnasty’, the tricky pot bunkers have shattered many a dream. It was here in 1999 that Jean Van De Velde famously blew the Open Championship.
Rory McIlroy will enter this event as the clear favourite. He will need to start faster than he did in Surrey for the BMW PGA Championship. McIlroy has had a slight tendency to oscillate between the sublime and ridiculous. Jon Rahm will feel slightly deflated by a surprisingly underwhelming Sunday at the PGA Championship. The Irish Open champion will feel quietly confident ahead of this links test. Danny Willett will look to continue the terrific form he showed in capturing that title in Wentworth last week. Surprisingly enough, recent World Number One Justin Rose will be making his debut appearance in this event. Open Champion Shane Lowry will command much fanfare while Tommy Fleetwood is always a crowd favourite.

Value Bets
Robert MacIntyre
To Win (50/1), To Place (11/1)
One of the breakthrough stories of the 2019 European Tour, Robert MacIntyre will no doubt enjoy huge swathes of support in his home country. He really burst onto the scene with back-to-back runner-up finishes at the British Masters and Made in Denmark event. But what really raised his profile was a remarkably composed performance at Royal Portrush. He actually finished a shot behind Brooks Koepka in a tie for 6th. He recently finished as bridesmaid again, finishing a shot behind Paul Casey at the European Open. I think that MacIntyre should thrive in these conditions, with the ability to lower his trajectory in windy conditions.
Ross Fisher
To Win (55/1), To Place (12/1)
This is one of those events in which recent from can be slightly overrated. Links specialists are always going to thrive in this event. And in Ross Fisher you have a master of the dark links arts. He was runner-up in this event in both 2016 and 2017. He holds the course record at St Andrews, which will come in handy since he plays that course twice this week. He made headlines last week for a remarkable albatross in the 3rd round of the BMW PGA. That capped off a stunning back nine of 29. He faded on Sunday with a really disappointing 76. He also won the 2010 Irish Open and was once again runner-up in this event in 2008. He just radiates value at 55/1, though he represents better value in the place markets.
The Man to Beat
Tyrell Hatton
To Win (28/1), To Place (6/1)
This is the absolute epitome of the ‘horses for courses’ approach. Tyrell Hatton won back-to-back Alfred Dunhill Championships between 2016 and 2017, with an aggregate score of 47 under par. The links specialist is just devastating around these courses. He would have completed an unprecedented three-peat last year were it not for a Sunday back-nine meltdown. Yes, it hasn’t been an amazing season for Hatton. But the links aficionado still managed a tie for 6th at the Open Championship. Not only is he a links specialist, but he thrives in awful conditions: he placed in the 2015 Irish Open during hellish weather. I just think that 28/1 for the absolute master of this event in recent history screams value.
