Our football analyst previews the PSL Week Seven action which kicks off on Friday 27 September 2019.
Polokwane City are amazingly the early pace setters and with one game to go before the first Q-Innovation of the season, they are in pole position to claim it. The chasing pack includes strong teams like Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. Let’s have a look at this week’s action.
Friday 27 September
Maritzburg United 27/20
Draw 17/10
Chippa United 5/2
These are two of the four teams who remain winless so far this season which sees them deeply involved in the relegation dogfight. Chippa United parted ways with coach Clinton Larsen last week and Duran Francis who is taking care of the team in the interim drew his first match in charge 0-0 against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Maritzburg United have lost three and drawn two of their five games so far this season and they might have felt hard done by pity when they conceded a stoppage time goal to lose 1-0 to Sundowns this past weekend.
I foresee the Team of Choice registering their first win of the season at home.
Saturday 28 September
Golden Arrows 21/20
Draw 2/1
Stellenbosch 26/10
Arrows head into this one off the back of three consecutive draws. Knox Mutizwa’s 86th minute penalty was enough to salvage a point against Cape Town City the last time out and they will be looking for nothing short of maximum points against the rookies.
Relegation-threatened Stellies must have thought they had registered their first win of the season last week only to go and concede a stoppage time equalizer against Black Leopards on Saturday. Waseem Isaacs bagged a brace and he will be key if they are to get something out if this clash.
My money is on the home side.
Orlando Pirates 21/20
Draw 2/1
Cape Town City 26/10
This is a battle of two struggling teams who are really punching below their weight when you consider the level of expectation at the start of the season. There’s a bit of rivalry going on as well as the 2-2 draw between these two teams denied Pirates the league title last season.
Pirates were on the losing end of the pulsating seven-goal thriller against Bidvest Wits on Saturday night. The positive they can take is that Tshegofatso Mabaso has started finding the back of the net with three goals in the last two appearances.
I’m backing Pirates here.
Kaizer Chiefs 8/10
Draw 22/10
Baroka 38/10
Chiefs are chasing the Q1 prize money and they could be standing a good chance to win it ahead of this encounter depending on their midweek result against AmaZulu. Baroka have been inconsistent with two defeats, two draws and two wins in their first six games.
This is a tough game to call as we don’t know which Baroka will rock up on the day, but I will take my chance with a Chiefs win.
SuperSport United 1/1
Draw 2/1
AmaZulu 31/10
SuperSport were clobbered 3-1 by Polokwane City last week in a match they finished with 10 men as Onismor Bhasera got sent off and he’s not available for selection in this game. AmaZulu might still be rooted to the foot of the table heading into this encounter depending on how they fare against Kaizer Chiefs in midweek.
I expect Matsatsantsa to win here.
Sunday 29 September
Black Leopards 17/10
Draw 17/10
Bloemfontein Celtic 39/20
Rumour has is that Black Leopards could head into this game with Luc Eymael as the head coach since they showed the entire technical team the exit door last week. Morgan Shivambu and Sam Banda who oversaw the team on Sunday managed to hold Stellenbosch to a 2-2 draw courtesy of a last-gasp equalizer. On the other hand, Bloemfontein Celtic have lost only one game so far this season.
I’m predicting a Celtic win.
Highlands Park 31/20
Draw 7/4
Polokwane City 43/20
Highlands Park have won their last two league games and they are high on confidence after reaching the MTN8 final as well. Peter Shalulile is tied on five goals with Bradley Grobler as the league’s top scorers. They face a Polokwane City side who top the log and whom they defeated on penalties in the MTN8 semi-finals.
The two-legged semi-final ended in a goalless draw in regulation time and I foresee another stalemate here.
QUAD @ 21/1
Golden Arrows Win 21/20
Kaizer Chiefs Win 8/10
SuperSport Win 1/1
Bloem Celtic Win 39/20
