Five talking points from some of the weekend's sporting highlights.
What Went Wrong with the Lions?
The Lions fell well short of the (-35.5) handicap set by the bookmakers at an empty Emirates Airline Park on Saturday. The Sunwolves took an early three-point lead through a penalty, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it'd be the last time the Japanese side would lead. However, after an intercept and a brilliant try by the Sunwolves' number 11, the visitors took a 31–26 lead on the hour mark.
But the Lions reverted to a tighter approach with their forwards to gain some sort of control of the game and a try from Rohan Janse van Rensburg brought the hosts back into the lead 40–31. The Sunwolves were not done as they scored in the 79th minute to bring the game within two points but the Lions held on to avoid one of the biggest upsets in world rugby since
that World Cup match between the Springboks and Japan.
Grand Slam for the Irish on St Patrick's Day
Ireland claimed their third grand slam in their Six Nations history after a 25 – 15 triumph over England at Twickenham on St Patrick’s day. Tries from Ringrose, Stander, and Stockdale lit up Twickenham as the Irishmen moved to the second best team in the World. They now look a very solid bet for World Cup glory come November.
Federer Left Bemused at Indian Wells
Roger Federer’s 17-match winning streak ended as Juan Martin del Potro beat the world number one 6-4 6-7 7-6 in a tight encounter to win the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. The Argentine saved three championship points and dominated the tie-break as Federer double faulted to hand the title to the Argentine.
Salah four-for puts him out front in race for Golden Boot
Mo Salah scored four on Saturday as Liverpool thrashed Watford 5–0. The Egyptian has now found the back of the net more than any other player for Liverpool in a debut season and is the leading goal scorer in all of Europe’s top five leagues with 36 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi and the injured Harry Kane. With seven games remaining in the Premier League for Liverpool and with 28 goals to his name it seems, he looks likely scoop the Golden Boot this season.
Karthik last ball 6 sends India into raptures
With India needing 5 runs from the last ball to win the Nidahas trophy Dinesh Karthik hit a six off the last ball of the innings to send India into a frenzy. The wicketkeeper scored 29 from 8 balls in just 15 minutes to get his team over the line against Bangladesh in the tri-series final.
