Our man, Shaun Goosen was at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium as the Kings recorded their first ever Pro14 win against the Dragons on Friday.
Southern Kings boss Deon Davids remained impassive following his side's emphatic 45-13 Pro14 win over the Dragons in Port Elizabeth on Friday. The victory, the King's first in the competition, ended a losing run stretching back 16-matches and was, according to Davids, built on a “total team effort.”
“There was a big belief tonight amongst the players. There was something special. We started well, created a lot of opportunities but didn’t capitalize on that [in the first-half]. But I’m glad that the guys kept their heads and stepped it up. It was a tremendous effort from the guys coming from the bench. It was a total team effort tonight.”
Post-match, Davids stressed the importance of his side embracing the moment and enjoying their special achievement in front of their home support.
“I just want them to suck in this feeling. I told them it’s important for us to enjoy the journey that we are on and to take note of the scenery around us as we go from Point A to Point B. For us it’s always important to take the lessons in. It’s always nice to take success if it was hard-earned and if you had to work for it.
“The win will mean a lot. We have something to look forward to now with four games at home and we’re really excited. The guys get a deserved break this week before we begin preparing again. The win came at the right time, we can build on this and after [the four games] we can start going forward.”
Flank Andisa Ntsila was a menace all night long for the hosts, with the 24-year-old's mazy runs and dogged defence keeping the Welshmen on the back foot throughout the contest. When queried about his potentially earning a Springbok call-up, Davids remained optimistic.
"He’s been tremendous for us all season. I think he’s really stepping up as a senior player. Him together with Tienie Burger and Ruaan Lerm are guys that are really grafting; doing the dirty work.
They always fight with ball in hand, making meters and those are the type of characters that you want. Sometimes character exceeds talent and I think that Andisa is showing the character that we want.”
Earlier, his side had hit back from 10-0 down to lead 14-13 at the break, courtesy of tries from Luzuko Vulindlu and Masixole Banda. Vulindlu's second immediately after the interval, followed up by five-pointers from Lerm, Anthony Volminck and Bobby de Wee saw the Kings home comfortably by six-tries to one.
Despite their thrilling bonus-point win, the Kings remain rooted to the bottom of the Conference B standings on nine-points. The Dragons are eight-points above them in sixth-position with four-matches in hand.
