Wissam Ben Yedder stepped off the bench to score a match-winning brace as Sevilla beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Match Summary
- Manchester United 1 Sevilla 2
- Rico denies Fellaini in first half
- Lingard also fails to beat Rico
- Ben Yedder brace puts Sevilla in control
- Lukaku strike halves the deficit
A dull first half saw few opportunities at either end. After Ben Yedder was introduced in the 72nd minute, he changed the complexion of the game, scoring twice. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for the Red Devils, but it was little more than a consolation goal as Jose Mourinho's side limped out of Europe.
Full Report
The hosts started brightly and showed plenty of attacking intent but as the half progressed, Sevilla took control. In the ninth minute, they went relatively close to breaking the deadlock as Joaquin Correa headed just over the bar after meeting Ever Banega's corner at the near post.
However, the Spanish outfit's finishing left a lot to be desired and they failed to capitalise on their spell of dominance.
United showed promise again towards the end of the half. In the 38th minute, Marouane Fellaini played a one-two off Alexis Sanchez, who set him up on the left of the box. However, the Belgian's effort was saved by Sergio Rico at the near post.
The visitors were denied a goal within three minutes of the half-time break by a last-ditch Eric Bailly challenge. Pablo Sarabia's ball in from the right found Correa, but the Ivorian defender reacted brilliantly to take the ball off him.
At the other end, Lukaku set Jesse Lingard up from the right and the winger fired across the keeper, forcing an alert fingertip save from Rico in the 52nd minute.
In the 74th minute, Ben Yedder broke the deadlock just two minutes after coming off the bench. After receiving the ball from Sarabia just outside the box, he controlled before blasting a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
The substitute doubled up in the 78th minute. After being left unmarked at the far post, he met a flick-on from Correa following a corner and headed over the line off David De Gea's glove.
All of a sudden the game sprung to life. Chris Smalling failed to control a free-kick at the far post, which he could easily have slotted home. However, United hit back through Lukaku in the 84th minute when he acrobatically hooked a Rashford corner into the net from six yards out.
Both teams continued to press forward. Ben Yedder should have wrapped up his hat-trick in stoppage time after being played clean through, but fired straight at De Gea.
