Hero Indian Open
The Gary Player Course, DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurgaon, India
28th March - 31st March
This event was the brainchild of Aussie golfing great Peter Thompson. The great innovator won the inaugural staging of this event back in 1964, only to claim further titles in 1966 and 1976. The event became an official Asian Tour event in 1970 and was incorporated into the European fold as recently as 2015. The first two editions of the newly minted, European Tour co-sanctioned Indian Open took place at the idiosyncratic Delhi Golf Course. The organizers changed tact two years back, moving to the seemingly gargantuan Gary Player Course and the DLF Golf and Country Club.
Situated in the Aravalli Hills near New Delhi, the DLF Golf and Country Club opened to much fanfare in 2015. Heralded as a monster at over 7,600 yards off the back tees, many speculators were left rather dumbfounded when major tee alterations completely altered the shape of the course in 2017. SSP Chawrasia is notoriously short off the tee and defended his title in 2017. So don’t believe the hype and one can fully expect further on-course alterations on a course defined by dramatic elevation shifts. The course has narrow fairways and is Bermuda all-round. But the fiendish bunkering and cruel water hazards make this a demonic test of patience: Eddie Pepperell famously said that the course was designed by Satan in 2017. Staying clear of trouble will prove paramount this week, as only 15 players bettered par last year.
It’s clearly not going to be the greatest of fields considering the shenanigans in Austin, Texas. The newly condensed FedEx Cup schedule is going to need to be considered by Keith Pelley as the European Tour goes forward: Rory McIlroy’s withdrawal from the Irish Open later this year is a disturbing example of where we stand at present. Jorge Campillo has been in great form while the home support will no doubt be fully behind Anirban Lahiri. Jazz Janewattananond has threatened with contention while SSP Chawrasia will be looking to make it three titles this week.

Value Bets
Maximilian Kieffer
To Win (28/1)
To Place (6/1)
German Maximilian Kieffer has been one of the hottest golfers on the European Tour for the last few weeks. His form figures read 2-15-4 and this could represent an amazing opportunity for him to collect that maiden European Tour victory. In fact, his solo win as a pro came in India with the Gujarat Kensville Challenge. Kieffer has been close in four of his last sixteen starts and this course should prove ideally suited to him. It doesn’t require a butcher’s hand and should open up to his surgical precision.
Mikko Korhonen
To Win (55/1)
To Place (12/1)
Mikko Korhonen broke through for that victory at the Shot Clock Masters. Both that track and this one tend to favour players with the capacity to notch up a high GIR count. Korhonen actually led the field in GIR in his penultimate event at the Qatar Masters: he hit a whopping 87.5% of greens in regulation. He missed the cut in Malaysia last week, though his victory last season came off the back of a missed cut. He plays well on tricky tracks, with a 2nd at last year’s BMW International Open and a 2nd at Valderrama.
The Man to Beat
Anirban Lahiri
To Win (16/1)
To Place (7/2)
At 16/1, Anirban Lahiri is perhaps one of the better favourites you could hope to find this year. He won this event- albeit at a different course- in 2015. He has a sensational record in his home country, scoring nine top 10’s in his last twelve starts in India. That titles in 2015 was his 4th title here following two Sail Opens and a Panasonic Open. He was 5th on debut here in 2017 and should prove formidable once again this week. He is coming off a Sunday best 68 at the Valspar and should have the quality to move up through this field.
