India came unstuck in pursuit of a total that appeared very much to be within their powers to chase in the first ODI of the series - and now find themselves playing catch-up cricket.
Australia's batsmen may have won the day with a slow and steady act in Sydney, but they will need to find top gear in Adelaide.

To Win Match
Australia 5/4
Tie 35/1
India 66/100
Australia
Half-tons for Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb highlighted a batting effort that was sufficient, if not spectacular, but the match had been won by the quicks at the outset of the chase in Sydney.
Handscomb's innings was closest to the kind of quality Australia will be looking for going forward in this series, building towards the World Cup. The unorthodox middle-order man kept the scoreboard ticking over after battling efforts by Khawaja and Marsh - and looks to be the form man in the current line-up.
Jhye Richardson starred with the ball and claimed the vital scalp of India skipper Virat Kohli early on to turn the game decisively in Australia's favour. Fellow opening bowler Jason Behrendorff also put in a good shift on debut, taking the new ball alongside state team-mate Richardson.
Off-spinner Nathan Lyon has yet to prove that he should be included in the World Cup squad since making his return to the ODI format last year. That means the Test number one may have to make way for all-rounder Ashton Agar, whose inclusion would be a boost to the hosts' batting strength.
India
Lokesh Rahul and Hardik Pandya were sent home following sexist comments they made on the Indian talk show Koffee with Karan. The programme aired just before the first ODI and the BCCI announced, after a public outcry, that the players would be suspended pending disciplinary action. No replacements have been named for the pair.
Rohit Sharma played a lone hand with his century in the first match, but will likely expect to receive much more support from Shikhar Dhawan and number three, Kohli. Dhawan and Kohli were nipped out early and the tourists could not recover.
India bowled quite well as a unit and Kohli's charges would probably have been reasonably confident ahead of the chase.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar showed value with both bat and ball - and should be the first name on India's team sheet every day of the week.
Verdict: India 66/100
Kohli's troops should deliver a fiery response to Australia claiming an early series lead - and level the contest.
