The Indian Premier League looks set to cause a few national team coaches headaches as it cuts into World Cup preparations and we could expect to see certain stars used sparingly.
While there may be no formal agreements in place, it is likely that all teams deploying players with World Cup prospects will have been made aware of coaches' preferences for their charges.
India players are a whole different kettle of fish and we can expect to see all of their key players as well as a number of fringe players having their workloads managed strictly, meaning franchises could be without their stars for key matches.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India's rule will be law when it comes to the handling of international players, especially after the debacle surrounding the injuries suffered to Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha last year in what was a massive year in the format for Virat Kohli's men.
Communication between the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Saha's first-class team and the India team management left a lot to be desired and in the long run, probably exacerbated his injuries - and Ravi Shastri will not want a rerun of the grilling he received on the matter.
The other issue for the IPL may be reticence on the part of foreign boards when it comes to allowing their key players to take part in a tournament that risks putting them out of the quadrennial showpiece starting in England on 30 May.
While England have allowed some of their white-ball specialists to join in on the IPL fun, including Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, the Proteas announced the late withdrawals of seamers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi with minor injuries.
In a normal season, we could have seen Nortje and Ngidi finish the series against Sri Lanka and turn out in the IPL, but Ottis Gibson has erred on the side of caution and we may see more withdrawals before the tournament and in the early going.
The IPL has often been accused of compromising on quality in favour of showmanship, but rotation of India stars and international players could see that standard dip to an unacceptable level.
Fans will, of course, want to see their favourite stars and are likely to be displeased if they have bought a ticket expecting to see MS Dhoni or Kohli only to see them rested, even if they understand the thinking behind it.
The IPL will give coaches across the world sleepless nights as we enter the final stretch ahead of the World Cup and might make it hard for those men to enjoy the cricket that is put on. The fans, too, could be left disappointed by the standard of a tournament that will feel rushed with the big show on the horizon.
IPL 2019 should still provide thrills and spills, but it just may fall short of previous years as it takes place in the World Cup's shadow.
