We take a look at selected quarter final and semi final fixtures from the WTA Tour's Indian Wells Open taking place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on the 15th of March.

Venus Williams (16/10) vs Angelique Kerber (9/20) (8)
It was always going to be a tough ask for Venus Williams to replicate the sensational form that saw her each two Grand Slam Finals in 2017. The seven-time Major winner has Sjogren’s, which is a debilitating auto-immune disease that was always going to make protracted form an issue. She enjoyed the best result of her poor 2018 at Indian Wells, with an amazing run to the semi-final stage. She actually managed to beat her sister Serena in that event. Amazingly enough, Venus has never reached the final at Indian Wells. She will be looking to make a little bit of personal history this week. She started the year in Auckland, losing to current Indian Wells teenage sensation Bianca Andreescu at the quarterfinal stage. She was soundly beaten by Halep in the 3rd round of Melbourne, so her run this week has been somewhat unexpected. Her tight victory over Aussie Open finalist Petra Kvitova in the round of 64 stage was a real harbinger of things to come.
I was quite surprised that Kerber managed to sneak past Aryna Sabalekna. The German has been a pale imitation of herself thus far this season, with that thrashing at the hands of unheralded Danielle Collins in Melbourne a devastating blow to her confidence. But the experienced and crafty German is still on course to become the first German champion here since Steffi Graf in 1996. Last year’s Wimbledon Champion is looking to inject some momentum in a season that has been in a state of hibernation. In fact, her post-Wimbledon form has been largely poor. It would perhaps behoove the German starlet to start thinking of truncating her schedule to some degree as she ages. Nevertheless, you can never underestimate the German when it comes to the latter stages of events.
Kerber actually leads the head-to-head 5-3, winning their last encounter in Sydney last season. But I’m going to go ahead and fancy Williams at 16/10. Venus will be keen to exact a bit of sisterly revenge after the events that transpired at Wimbledon last year. More to the point, I think that Williams will be hugely motivated to capture that first Indian Wells title and emerge from sister’s shadow for a week.
Semi Finals
Bianca Andreescu (1/1) vs Elina Svitolina (6) (7/10)
What a crazy week it has been for Bianca Andreescu, especially when you consider she only won her first WTA match at the 2017 Citi Open. But it has been 2019 that has seen her really break through the ranks. She managed to reach her first WTA Final in the Auckland Open. She overcame the likes of Venus Williams and top seed Caroline Wozniacki before falling to defending champion Julia Gorges. She progressed to the main draw of the Aussie Open, losing in a tight three-setter to Sevatsova. She then won her first WTA 125 event in Newport Beach. She then reached the semi-finals in Mexico prior to this event. Her absolute demolition of Garbine Muguruza in the last round dispelled any lingering doubts about the Canadian’s abilities.
Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina has enjoyed a steady start to the season, with this being her 3rd semi-final to go alongside that quarterfinal at the Aussie Open. There will always be those lingering concerns about her abilities on the Major stage till she makes a significant breakthrough. Last season’s WTA Finals champion perhaps slightly disappointed last season in general, especially after those three amazing WTA Premier 5 titles she won in 2017. Svitolina is a brilliant player, compact on both wings with an amazing defensive capacity. She is perfectly suited to the rigors of the hardcourts, which makes the title she won in Rome last season all the more impressive.
This will unsurprisingly be their first ever meeting, with the young Canadian leaving a veritable elephant’s graveyard of first time victims in her wake this year. But I think Svitolina to win in straight sets at 16/10 may be worth your while. The young Canadian must be absolutely slaughtered flowing the amount of tennis she has played in recent weeks.
