Selected Round of 32 Matches - Tuesday 23 October 2019
David Goffin (6/10)
vs Marin Cilic (13/10)
This match brings together two sturdy competitors who have both shown their credentials in this event previously. David Goffin is clearly the form player out of the two. The 2014 finalist has defied many onlookers with a solid 2019 campaign. The industrious Belgian had a decent enough start to the year, with semi-finals in Estoril and the Open 13 a highlight. But it was surprisingly on grass where his season really started to build momentum. He reached the final in Halle prior to an excellent quarterfinal run at Wimbledon. That proved to be the springboard for an excellent last-season surge. He reached the final in Cincinnati before another deep round of 16 run at Flushing Meadows. A semi-final in Japan just served to highlight what a prolific end of season it has been for Goffin. His last two outings have been less spectacular, raising concerns that his hectic schedule may be catching up to him.
Former US Open champion Marin Cilic has generally had a season to forget. The hardcourt specialist has battled through equal parts injury and loss of form this year. It was a year that started with promise: a 4th round run at Melbourne seemed fairly routine. But Cilic has finished nowhere near the Nitto ATP Final slots in a year of disappointment. Quarter-finals in Madrid and Washington were fairly dim highlights leading into his beloved US Open. But the gangly Croatian seemed to find some form in New York. He pushed eventual champion Rafa Nadal to four sets in a gripping round of 16 match. Cilic purists will also feel emboldened by his results last week. He reached his first semi-final of the year at the admittedly lower grade Kremlin Cup. But the 2016 champion here in Basel will feel quite at home this week and may sense vulnerability in the Goffin makeup.
There is little to separate these two. They share the head-to-head spoils 3-3. Having said that, Cilic has won their last three matches. Additionally, Cilic has won their only encounter on indoor hardcourts. I think that Cilic looks like great value at 13/10.
Frances Tiafoe (23/20)
vs Dan Evans (13/20)
Frances Tiafoe will feel relieved that he secured his qualification for the season-ending Next Gen Finals last week. His quarter-final showing at the European Open consolidated his spot. The big-hitting world number 48 was coming off the back of two consecutive first round losses. The American has really had little consistency to speak of this year. He has really qualified on the basis of two herculean efforts in gargantuan events. He reached the quarterfinals of the Aussie Open and Miami Open. He actually hasn’t reached a semi-final all season long. So, there are certainly lingering questions over his motivation going into regular tour events. Surely a player with his raw talent should be knocking on the door more consistently.
Dan Evans almost exists at the opposite end of the spectrum. Though not as inherently gifted as Tiafoe, the Brit has mined far more out of his abilities this season. The world number 43 reached the Delray Beach Final earlier this year- this was an event that Tiafoe actually won last year. He then had a solid grass-court season, beginning with wins in the Surbiton Trophy and Notts Challenger Series. He also reached the quarterfinals in Eastbourne prior to 3rd round Wimbledon run. Since then has managed some sporadic success: he reached the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Open. But one thing that he guaranteed with Dan Evans is complete and utter commitment. The often languid Tiafoe will need to be aware of that as they meet for the 2nd time.
Dan Evans won their only previous encounter in Delray earlier this year. It was a hard-fought three set victory for the Brit. And as I noted earlier, Tiafoe was the defending Delray Beach champion. I know it sounds as if I have been talking Tiafoe down. But perhaps he will play with more freedom this week after securing that Next Gen Finals spot. He also makes for much better value at 23/20.
