The 2019/20 La Liga season has been full of excitement and not short of surprises. Nobody would have guessed that after seven rounds of play, newly-promoted Granada would be sitting above Barcelona, who would be in fifth place.
Barca lost just three times in the entirety of La Liga last term. This season, the Spanish champions have already been beaten twice. As for Real Madrid, who were the laughing stock not that long ago, they’re currently top of the standings and remain the only unbeaten side in the league. Gameweek 8 has some cracking encounters lined up. As well as great football to watch, there’s lots of money to be made and I’m feeling optimistic about my picks.
Friday 4 October
Real Betis 1/1
Draw 51/20
Eibar 26/10
(21:00)
Real Betis will play their third Friday night fixture of the La Liga season as they entertain in-form Eibar. Betis will be hoping to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible after last week’s heavy 5-1 defeat at Villarreal. The Andalusian side will be delighted to be playing at their Benito Villamarin Stadium. They’re unbeaten in their last three home games, recording wins over Leganes (2-1) and Levante (3-1) in between a 1-1 draw against Getafe. Eibar look to have turned a corner after a difficult start to the season where they failed to register a win in their first five matches. The Basque side are currently riding a two-match winning streak following victories over Sevilla (3-2) and Celta Vigo (2-0). Eibar went unbeaten in their two league encounters with Betis last season, picking up four points. Back the visitors on the Win/Draw Double Chance at 15/20.
Saturday 5 October
Leganes 9/10
Draw 24/10
Levante 31/10
(13:00)
The first game on Saturday sees bottom side Leganes host Levante at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque. The hosts remain the only side yet to register a win this season and have found the net just three times. Last weekend’s 1-0 loss at Granada was already their fifth defeat and Mauricio Pellegrino’s side will be desperate to stop the rot as they work to move out of the red zone. Levante are struggling themselves, going four games without a win, while they’ve lost all three of their games away from home this season. I’m going for a 1-1 draw at 52/10.
Real Madrid 3/10
Draw 9/2
Granada 7/1
(16:00)
One of the highlight fixtures of the weekend sees Real Madrid host Granada in a top-of-the-table clash at the Bernabeu on Saturday. Zinedine Zidane's men are top of the standings with 15 points and remain the only unbeaten side in La Liga. However, they have just a point more than Diego Martinez’s newly-promoted side. The last time Granada were in the top flight campaign, they finished bottom of the table. That certainly won’t be the case this time. Martinez’s side will be looking to defy the odds and upset Los Blancos on Saturday – they beat Barcelona 2-0 last month so they can’t be underestimated. But at the Bernabeu, Zidane's men should prove too strong. I’m backing Real Madrid to Win and Both Teams to Score at 27/20.
Valencia 11/20
Draw 29/10
Alaves 52/10
(18:30)
Valencia welcome Deportivo Alaves to the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday evening. Los Che come into this game off a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Athletic Bilbao – Denis Cheryshev’s goal handing Albert Celades his first La Liga win since taking over last month. This was Celades’ second win in charge – his first coming in the Champions League with an unexpected 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Alaves ended their five-match winless streak with a 2-0 victory at home to strugglers Mallorca. The visitors have struggled on the road this season, and Valencia – who have won in each of their last six home meetings with Alaves – should claim maximum points.
Osasuna 22/10
Draw 9/4 |
Villarreal 5/4
(21:00)
The final match on Saturday sees Villarreal take on last season's Segunda champions Osasuna at the El Sadar Stadium. Osasuna have been the draw specialists this season, having drawn five of their seven games. They beat bottom side Leganes 1-0 and were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in their other two fixtures – both away from home. The newly-promoted side could only manage a 1-1 draw at Levante last Sunday, despite Paco Lopez's side being reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute. Villarreal, on the other hand, will come into this game high on confidence following their 5-1 victory over Real Betis, their third win in four games – they lost 2-1 at Barcelona in that run. The away win is the way to go.
Sunday 6 October
Mallorca 15/10
Draw 2/1
Espanyol 2/1
(12:00)
Sunday’s action kicks off with a match between two struggling teams occupying the relegation places – Mallorca and Espanyol at the Iberostar Stadium. Given both sides’ poor form and position in the standings, it’s difficult to suggest an outcome here. I’d steer clear from this one, but if you must, back the draw.
Celta Vigo 37/20
Draw 2/1
Athletic Bilbao 33/20
(14:00)
Next on the menu, Athletic Bilbao travel to Galicia where they face Celta Vigo at the Balaidos stadium. Bilbao's unbeaten run in the Spanish league came to an end last weekend as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Valencia. Gaizka Garitano will be hoping for a perfect response against struggling Celta Vigo on Sunday. The Galicians come off a 2-0 defeat away to Eibar, who had gone into that game in the relegation zone. Bilbao completed a league double over Celta last season and I’m backing the Basque side to come away with all three points.
Valladolid 17/4
Draw 5/2
Atletico Madrid 7/10
(16:00)
Atletico Madrid will be seeking to return to winning ways when they visit 10th-placed Valladolid on Sunday afternoon. Diego Simeone's side were unable to capitalize on their home advantage against city rivals Real Madrid last weekend as they shared the spoils after a battling goalless draw. Valladolid, on the other hand, won 2-0 at Espanyol, which was their first victory since winning 2-1 at Real Betis on the opening day. It’s worth mentioning that Valladolid held Real Madrid at the Bernabeu this season and I’m sure that will be in the players’ minds going into this game. However, Simeone's side have a fantastic recent record against Valladolid, having won in each of their last eight meetings. With their sights on the La Liga title and that superior head-to-head record, I’m backing Atletico to come out on top.
Real Sociedad 17/20
Draw 23/10
Getafe 36/10
(18:30)
Real Sociedad welcome 16th-placed Getafe to the Reale Arena on Sunday evening. Imanol Alguacil's side will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after losing 3-2 at Sevilla last weekend. Prior to that defeat, the Basque outfit had won three on the spin, beating Atletico Madrid (2-0) and Alaves (3-0) at home and Espanyol away (3-1). Sociedad beat Getafe 2-1 on their turf last season and I’m backing a repeat of that result.
Barcelona 11/20
Draw 34/10
Sevilla 17/4
(21:00)
The gameweek closes out with an absolute cracker as Barcelona and Sevilla do battle at the Camp Nou. After recording back-to-back victories over Villarreal and Getafe, Ernesto Valverde will be hoping his side have now found their rhythm after a string of bad results that has seen the ex-Athletic Bilbao boss come under criticism. Valverde will be desperate for his side to continue their winning streak and will be delighted to be playing at their fortress. The Spanish champions are unbeaten in their last 15 La Liga matches at the Camp Nou, winning 14 times. It’s going to be incredibly difficult for Julen Lopetegui’s side to end that run. I don’t see it happening. Back Barcelona to oust their opponents.
TREBLE @ 4/1
Atletico Madrid Win 7/10
Real Sociedad Win 17/20
Barcelona Win 11/20
