We take a look at the WSB Cape Cobras' midweek Ram Slam T20 fixture against the Warriors.
The WSB Cape Cobras have recovered nicely following a poor start to the 2017/18 Ram Slam T20 Challenge campaign, recording wins in each of their last two matches.
The Warriors also battled initially but picked up their first win of the season last weekend, comfortably beating the bizhub Highveld Lions by four wickets.

WSB Cape Cobras
Following three straight defeats at the start of their Ram Slam T20 Challenge campaign, the WSB Cape Cobras have finally started to come good. Back to back wins against the bizhub Highveld Lions and the VKB Knights have seen them claim eight points, leaving them within striking distance of the Free State franchise who currently occupy second spot.
Much of their recent resurgence has come down to the form of Protea stalwarts, JP Duminy and Hashim Amla. Duminy in particular has been impressive, scoring 0, 55, 40, 45 and 67 in his five appearances. His runs – along with Amla’s – are carrying the team at the moment, something which has no doubt given him new found confidence. Look to the pair to make another big statement against an underperforming Warriors attack on Wednesday evening.
The problem for the Cobras with Duminy and Amla getting all runs is quite obvious – if they get out cheaply, who picks up the slack? Richard Levi has looked decidedly undercooked this season, averaging 4.5 in four innings. Wayne Parnell too hasn’t come to grips as an opener while Aviwe Mgijima has only shown us glimpses of his undoubted talent.
Bowling wise, Ashwell Prince will want to see more from some of his bowlers though. Vernon Philander could probably be a bit more economical while Duminy has been unable to translate his form with the bat into good bowling performances.
Ferisco Adams will be the bowler to watch. The Boland seamer has played in both of the Cobras’ win this season and will almost certainly make the starting XI against the Warriors. He’s only bagged a single wicket from his eight overs, however his economy of 6.50 is massive. If he is able to keep a dangerous Warriors batting line-up quiet in the middle overs, the Cobras are in with a massive shout.
Warriors
The Warriors – like the Cobras – suffered a poor start to the season. Three defeats and a N/R from your first four games after reaching the final of the competition last season is hardly ideal. Still, a strong batting display against an in-form Lions team would have done their confidence a world of good.
It comes as no surprise that the Warriors’ first victory of the 2017/18 campaign came after one of their big guns got a nig score. While JJ Smuts and Colin Ackermann battled against the Lions, Colin Ingram went berserk hitting seven sixes and five fours on his way to a 48-ball 89.
One or two of the abovementioned three will need to record another big score if they’re to have a sniff against the Cape Town outfit, especially if Hash and Duminy continue to cash in with the bat.
Another issue the Warriors are face with is a lack of an out and out wicket taker. Someone like Kagiso Rabada or Lungi Ngidi who will pick up 18 wickets throughout the course of the season. As it stands, Smuts, Basheeru-Deen Walters and Andrew Birch have three each from four matches.
Lastly, the Eastern Cape side will need to field better than they did against the Lions. They were absolutely awful in the field last time out. Lesiba Ngope embodied came under intense scrutiny, dropping a fairly simple chance off the batting on Rassie van der Dussen early on as well as failing to make a routine stop later on in the piece that ended up going for four.
Verdict: WSB Cape Cobras 72/100
The Cobras are a side on the up and look hot favourites to get the business done over the Warriors in Paarl. With Amla and Duminy piling on the runs and an economical seam attack keeping things quiet, you simply can’t go wrong backing the Western Cape outfit
