It's been a tough old year for the Canadians who came unstuck in the second leg of their doubleheader World Cup Qualifier against the USA back in June. The Canucks managed to draw the first leg but lost by 36 points in the second leg, which ironically, took place on Canada Day. That two-legged defeat means that the Canadians will have to win their repechage game against Uruguay next January if they are to qualify for Japan 2019.
Speaking of that date with Uruguay, the fixture against the Maori All Blacks is a big part of Canada's preparation for the January showdown. The Canadians really don't get much international exposure and coming up against the likes of Charlie Ngati and Brad Webber will do them a world of good.

This is the second successive year that the Maori will start a tour against a team from the Americas. They took on the United States in 2016 and ran out 7-54 victors with James Lowe and Akira Ioane stealing the spotlight by grabbing a brace of tries apiece. Lowe will not tour with the squad this year but Ioane does return and he is likely to cause the Canadians all sorts of problems on Saturday.
Another man who most pundits are expecting to make a big impact here is Charlie Ngati. The Chiefs' centre was plagued by injuries over the past few years but seems to have overcome them. He was solid for Taranaki during the recently concluded Mitre 10 Cup, and there were certainly signs that he was getting back to his best. The one-cap All Black will start at fullback this weekend with Canterbury's Rob Thompson lining up at 12.

Viewers of the Mitre 10 Cup will know just how good this Maori side is. I'm expecting their solid forward pack to lay a great foundation this week, which will see this lethal backline absolutely destroy the poor old Canadian skinnies. My money is on the Maori winning this one by more than 30 points.
