We take a look at week 12 of the French Ligue 1 season which is set to get underway on Friday 3 November.
All of the big boys managed to win last time out with PSG, Monaco, Lyon and Marseille all securing maximum points against lesser opposition.
This week sees yet another full set of fixtures coming our way with Lyon’s trip to St-Etienne arguably the pick of the bunch. Elsewhere PSG are away to Angers while Monaco welcome Guingamp to the Principality.
Friday 3 November
Rennes 21/10 | Draw 21/10 | Bordeaux 14/10
We open things up this week with an interesting fixture which sees Rennes looking to make it three from three in the league against a Bordeaux side who have lost their last two. The hosts grabbed one of the upsets of the week last time out as they beat Montpellier at Stade de la Mosson. The result would have done wonders for their confidence going into another difficult tie.
Bordeaux have plummeted down the table following an excellent start to the season. Defeat against Amiens was followed up by yet another loss against Monaco last week. They’ve struggled defensively after conceding very few goals in the early parts of the season, and desperately need a big performance this week to spark a bit of a revival.
Take the home side on the win/draw at 11/20 here, they do after all have all of the momentum.
Saturday 4 November
Angers 25/2 | Draw 6/1 | PSG 2/11
With only one win in six, Angers will do well to come away with anything when they welcome PSG to Stade Raymond Kopa on Saturday afternoon. They’ll take a bit of confidence from their last outing – a 2-2 draw with Strasbourg – but will no doubt have been disappointed not to come away with more after taking a 75th minute lead.
PSG were back to their best last time out against Nice, this despite being without the services of the suspended Neymar. Edinson Cavaini showed the Paris faithful why he still is very much the main man at the club with a magnificent performances which included two goals and an assist. The visitors are back to their best and should have little trouble here.
Back them on the (-1) handicap at 9/20.
Troyes 16/10 | Draw 22/10 | Strasbourg 7/4
I was pretty disappointed with Troyes last time out as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Caen. While Caen have one of the better defensive records in the division, they still managed to carve out some decent chances for themselves, better finishing is required this week then.
Strasbourg could only manage a 2-2 draw with Angers during the last matchweek as they remain in 18th place on the standings. Their cause, of course, isn’t helped by the fact that they’ve got the joint-worst defensive record in the league along with Dijon. They’ve not kept a clean sheet in their last 10 outings in all competitions.
With this in mind, take both teams to score at 12/10.
Montpellier 15/20 | Draw 47/20 | Amiens 17/4
Montpellier will be confident of bouncing back from last week’s surprise defeat at the hands of Rennes when they welcome lowly Amiens to Stade de la Mosson. Last week’s defeat put an end to an excellent undefeated run which spanned seven games across all competitions and included opposition like St-Etienne, Monaco and PSG.
Amiens are in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone if they are unable to come away with at least a point at the weekend. I’ll keep this segment of the preview pretty short, Montpellier are by far the superior side and should have little trouble against a side who conceded 65% of possession to Guingamp last week.
Back the home with at 15/20.
Monaco 4/10 | Draw 4/1 | Guingamp 57/10
Monaco appear to have refocussed and are once again playing the kind of football that saw them crowned Ligue 1 champions last season. They condemned Bordeaux to their fourth straight defeat last time out with goals from Keita Balde and Thomas Lemar.
Guingamp will struggle to match the men from the Principality this weekend. They would have been very disappointed not to come away with more than a point last time out against 10-man Amiens. Despite dominating the match from start to end, they simply couldn’t kill off their opposition. That draw last week doesn’t bode well for them,
Monaco should be too strong here and must be backed on the (-1) cap at even money.
Nantes 19/20 | Draw 9/4 | Toulouse 33/10
Nantes were the only team in the top five to taste defeat last week as they went down – somewhat surprisingly – away to Dijon. They’ll need to refocus now and not let the defeat scupper to good work that they’ve done under Claudio Ranieri this season.
It won’t be easy against a Toulouse side who haven’t tasted defeat in four matches – the three most recent of those without conceding. They did well to shut out a St-Etienne side who are stronger on paper. Neither of these sides is particularly prolific in front of goal.
Take the totals, under 2.5 goals at 5/10.
Sunday 5 November
Nice 13/20 | Draw 28/10 | Dijon 39/10
There’s no use in sugar coating it – Nice have been trash of late as they continue to plummet down the table. They’ve lost all four of their last league outings, failing to score in two of those. Having said that, those defeats did come against some of the division’s bigger boys in the form of PSG, Marseille and Montpellier.
The last thing the hosts will need then is the visit of Dijon. Olivier Dall'Oglio’s men have now won two on the trot will be keen to heap a bit more misery on Balotelli and co. when he takes his side to the Allianz Riviera. Nice are in awful form at the moment and will do well to come away with anything from this match.
Take away double chance at 11/10.
Metz 22/10 | Draw 22/10 | Lille 13/10
Next up is the battle of the cellar-dwellers as Metz and Lille go head to head at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. Neither side looks like avoiding relegation this season, with Metz having lost their last five matches while Lille haven’t had a win in nine. This really isn’t the sort of match you should be punting on, however, if you must have a go then back the draw at 22/10.
Marseille 5/10 | Draw 33/10 | Caen 52/10
Marseille grabbed all three points thanks to a solitary from Morgan Sanson. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Marseille as Lille peppered Steve Mandanda’s goal with shots throughout the game. Not ideal, conceding 62% possession to such an out of form side, but a win is a win!
They’ll welcome Caen to the Orange Vélodrome on Sunday. The visitors grabbed a good win at home against Troyes last week, although a repeat of that result seems unlikely against Rudi García’s charges.
Marseille all the way here, add this to all weekend multiples.
St-Etienne 28/10 | Draw 26/10 | Lyon 9/10
We round off this week’s action with the tie of the round as St-Etienne prepare for the arrival of Lyon. St-Etienne were held to a goalless draw last weekend by Toulouse, a match they perhaps felt that they could have won prior to kick off.
Lyon continued their fine run of form with their third win on the spin as they eased past bottom side Metz last week. It won’t be as easy this weekend, however. Anyone who follows Ligue 1 will know how good St-Etienne are defensively, especially at home where they’ve only tasted defeat once this season. I think Lyon will win this one narrowly.
Get on the Matchbet + Totals – under 2.5 goals and away at 29/10.
Treble tipped at 6.35/1
Montpellier win 15/20
Monaco (-1) 1/1
Dijon Win/Draw 11/10
